Loved this Show
Stumbled on to this series. Really well written series. The characters are really good. Small town Sheriff with big time crimes and bad corrupt people. This really a modern western style show. You can really get hooked on the storyline. I ended up getting entire series. There are a lot of surprises in the stories.

I like it, but with some reservations
First off, I've read a few of the books, and I really love the character of Sheriff Walt Longmire. That said, I have a couple of small complaints on the show. I'll get to those in a moment. Lets talk about some good stuff, first. The plots are well thought out, and provide for some interesting twists and turns. I particulary liked the outcome in one of the shows where everything looked to be fowl play, and in the end the death was caused by a tragic accident. I won't give too much away, but enjoyed the deviation from criminal misconduct. The other good things are the actors. I thought they were well chosen for thier roles. I initially (after having read the books) had a hard time feeling that Henry Standing Bear was well represented, but it all worked out nicely as I watched. Now, lets look at a few things that made this a four star show for me, rather than a five star show. I can't stand it when script writers interject their personal opinions into a show to try to sway public opinion on an issue. Within the first four episodes there were several incidents that either displayed an utter ignorance toward firearms and gun ownership, or worse yet... an utter contempt for gun ownership. I sucked up their mounting modern optics on a classic blackpowder cartridge rifle, and calling it a "powerful sniper rifle". Describing the .45-70 cartridge as a powerful cartridge that most people wouldn't need. Well, ok, we'll chalk all of that up to ignorance. But, to make matters worse the producer's anti-gun ignorance came out with the quote about living in a world "where anyone can order an AK-47 over the internet." This is a factually incorrect statement, intended to sway viewers' opinions, and not in accordance with the experience of any rural law enforcement officer. First, AK-47s are not legal without a Class III license, huge fee and background investigation conducted by the FBI. The semi-automatic clones of the AK-47, which can be purchased at an FFL dealer with an appropriate background check are not assault rifless by definition, but are popular with collectors for a current cost of about $600-900.00. My next majo complaint would be with uniformity. As sheriff, Walt Longmire will likely wear some form of civilian clothes, as that is an elected position, but he may well wear the department uniform, too. We'll cut him a little slack. However, Vick's attempt to sexy up her uniform, and never wearing the department headgear (a Stetson), may well land her in a bit of trouble. Beyond that, it looks like the department issues Glock autos, so why in the heck is ferg still packing around an antique? That wouldn't fly where I work. Even knowing I'm a 1911 guy, my employer requires that the Glock 22 or 23 are the firearms carried on duty. I suppose for most departments these days, it is all about liability. I don't see Ferg's wheel gun making any friends on the department. Oh, one more thing, while we're talking about department guns. Just who carries a 1911 with the hammer down? Just wondering. I'm surprised to see Walt carrying the 1911 in a holster without a strap, and with the hammer down. I guess that is all about the viewers, and all about some serious gun ignorance, too. It probably seems like I've hammered away at the show pretty badly. I guess, so. However, I still enjoyed the plots well enough to give it four stars. Part of that probably stems from my having been stationed in the Black Hills as an Army recruiter some years back, and my admiration for the people and region. It probably got an extra star for scenery and the mix of rancher and reservation. Enjoy the story, but you'll need to wrestle through the anti-gun, gun-ignorance portions if you are a shooter. Cops, you'll need to wrestle through a bit more. If you can't take the show, do read the books, they are fantastic!

A modern Gunsmoke
I missed the debut of this series on TV, but had to good fortune to be targeted by Amazon based on my other likes for detective shows and westerns like Justified. And here is a western detective show, just for me. The lead character is Sheriff Longmire protecting the people of Abshoka County in Wyoming. There are lots of shots of driving around, and just standing around, in the beautiful American West so lovingly portayed in old John Ford movies.Robert Taylor plays the Sheriff and is very convincing as the determined, smart, dedicated Sheriff. HIs wardrobe is Western-perfect, big hat and long leather coat. He generally tilts his head so you can just see his eyes just under the brim of his hat, making him look cool, threatening, and attractive at the same time. He has just enough problems to make him modern. He drinks a little too much and pays too little attention to his job in the last year since his wife died. The other characters in the show are well drawn. The loving daughter Caty, trying to connect with her stoic dad, dating a good guy that her Dad won't like. The bumbling deputy, hired as a favor, trying to make good. The young upstart square-jawed deputy trying to take the Sheriff's position after Sheriff's Longmire's professional lapses while getting over his wife's death. And even Lou Diamond Phillips is good as the local Indian bar owner and Longmire's long-time friend. Phillips provides a window into the local Indian reservation that figures in many of the storylines. The writing of each episode here is very good. There is enough modern drama, with Mexican drug cartels and Mennonite strippers, to satisfy jaded worldly viewers. But there is also plenty of old-fashioned good story telling. You will care about the Sheriff who gets misty-eyed over a severly injured horse, and will drive five hours give the bad news to a woman who doesn't know she is a widow yet.The characters are interesting and believable. The episodes are well plotted, with each crime being self-contained into the hour long show, but containing plenty of longer term information drawing you into the character's lives. The camera work is lovely on both the large scale and the small. Plenty of the American West horizon spreading out before you, with some artistic touches like the Sheriff's tear hitting his boot while he is telling the unsuspecting widow that her husband won't be coming back from that business trip.I loved this series, and will definitely be buying the subsequent seasons. DVD is a great way to watch TV series, a whole season at a time. The only bad thing is sometimes you buy an entire season of a show you don't like (Vikings). The good news is that when it works, like Longmire and Hell On Wheels, it is just great.

Great series the Sheriff of a town who personal live and is working live he tries to sort out, the battle to keep the two separate is hard when the it come to the murder of his wife. The first season shows random flashback scenes detailing Walt and Henry traveling separately to Denver, Colorado, where Walt attacks someone in a meth house. Denver Police Homicide Detective Fales (Charles S. Dutton) later arrives in Wyoming to talk to Walt and Cady about her mother's death. Cady is shocked to learn her mother was murdered, as Walt had told her she died of cancer. Fales tells Walt they found the man suspected of killing his wife buried in a shallow grave. Walt denies killing him; however, Detective Fales feels that if Walt did not commit the murder, then Henry did. Great TV series
If you are a fan of the Walt Longmire books by Craig Johnson I would highly recommend the DVD of the television series. The stories are slightly different to the books but I don't find that a problem. Robert Taylor who plays Walt Longmire is perfect in the part. He is just as I imagined him from the books. Lou Diamond Phillips as Henry Standing Bear is also perfectly cast. Katee Sackhoff, though blond is very good as Vic(in the books she is a brunette). In fact all the cast are excellent as are the actors who only appear occasionally. The scriptwriting & directing also needs commending. The series is filmed in New Mexico though the stories are set in Wyoming; the scenery is breathtaking. I am a big fan of this series & recommend the DVD.

Simply magnificent
First of all, the only thing i don't like about this series is Katee Sackhoff. Wrested from Galactica where she could at least be viewed through the glasses of suspended disbelieve I found her intensely and irritatingly out of place here. That aside, this is simply magnificent. Great plots in a wonderful setting of rustic America. The shambling and honorable hero is staggeringly well portrayed and this has more atmosphere than anything i have seen these past five years. This is addictive and shows that the USA can make good televison and not just recycle the same old dull rubbish.

truly enjoyable
Longmire is brilliant stuff-an American police series with a different style and setting, avoiding excessive shooting and car chasing and delightfully free of expletives. There is a strong Native American connection which avoids cliche or patronising political correctness and adds a whole extra dimension to the story quality. We have watched several series on tv and are now starting to collect and rewatch. Robert Taylor is excellent as the lead and the great Lou Diamond Philips is a principal character too : back up actors all good. Love it, recommend it.

A great first series.
If you have just recently started to watch Longmire on TV via Series 2, 3 or more, then this collection of the very first episodes is an absolute must. They set the scene for everything to come. Not exactly a western as such but strangely manages to include many of the features that one might expect in such a genre while still maintaining a modern aspect. This is in spite of Walt Longmire being very old-fashioned and down-to-earth. A typical sheriff in many respects.
