This is a must own for any true gym rat and HS hoops fan. Even if you are not a sports junkie, you can appreciate this amazing story. Without a doubt, this documentary is more than the story of a basketball coaching legend. Yes, Bob Hurley has won well over 900 basketball games and St. Anthony have won 25 state championships, half of the NJ state Tournament of Championships (nine), and 2 national championships. But this film shows more of the grit and mean streets of Jersey City and the life of these kids who, at times, do seem to know how tough they have it and how bad the surroundings are all over certain sections of North Jersey and New York City. This is the incredibly compelling story about a hoops legend and a teacher of life skills who graduates all of his players and sends all of them on to college over a 30 year career. This story gives so much insight and background color into what many consider to be the greatest high school basketball team in the country for the past 30 years. Bob Hurley is such a caring coach who is driven to succeed and to see his kids win on the court, but more concerned with thier success off it.The cinematic qualities - for a documentary - are surprisingly well done. The music and editing help to keep this story moving at a good pace and shed enough light onto the backstory of a few players and their coach so that you really feel like you know them much better at the end. I watched it twice as soon as I got it from Amazon and think this film is awesome. Rashon Burno (former DePaul star PG and St. Anthony's grad) helps produce this excellent film and shows the difficult ecomomic climate under which this tiny Catholic school in Jersey City, NJ really operates. The high school has an enrollement of less than 240 kids yet they produce some of the quickest, most precise and powerful basketball teams ever coached. Plus the film shows how these little old Felician nuns who run the school, keep its doors open and have prevented the school from closing due to running out of money on multiple occassions. Burno and many former players are interviewed to share their respect for their coach, personal anectodes about the work ethic of the players on the team and their ability to produce under extreme pressure from the outside world, from their opponents on the court, and all the while keeping their noses clean to stay on the team and win as a strong unit. Wathcing these kids from such humble beginnings doing things the right way to make their families proud is really one amazing aspects of this film. I hope they make this story into a feature full length motion picture.Buy this today!

I got this for my husband because he was a high school basketball coach.I ended up enjoying it as much as he did.What I found truly heartbreaking was that the school needs approximately $1 million a year to provide education, sports and more to the student body. Yet trying to raise that $1 million is a long, slow, arduous - and often failed - endeavor.NBA players should be paid as much money as they - or their agent - can get for them. However, it would be nice if someone in the league organized a way for schools such as these to receive even a tiny contribution from interested players so that the school can continue to be a force for good in the life of the kids.I sent a small check of what I could afford, and then sent copies of the DVD to friends who I thought might also be able to make a contribution. Hopefully, this DVD will get the word out, and the school will receive some benefit for the publicity.Maybe a company like Netflix can send out free rental copies, and that would help to spread the word? There has to be a way to fund education, and all the bake sales in the world - though well intentioned and delicious! - are not addressing the need.

I watched the documentary last night and I wish my son was watching with me, he is in a boarding school. Im going to order the video for him. This video is all "Tough Love". Coach Hurley does not play and no kid should take it personally. Kids in this society think its all about how they look and need to carry a grudge on there shoulder, but coach Hurley does not tolerate it! I see alot of respect for this coach, I think its because they saw him as a father figure and somewhere they can feel safe, unlike the streets or even sometimes at home.I suggest that every parent buy this, especially if there kids think there is no hope and not taking life serious.St Anthony I think this will be a great way to fund for the school, you guys deserve it!!! Keep it up Coach!

Great documentary film on a season (and a life) with Bob Hurley. His no nonsense approach to his basketball program has landed all but 2 of his varsity players with college scholarships (as I recall from the film). Life is tough for his players but he doesn't allow excuses on or off the court. Will make you want to pull out the checkbook and write a check to help keep this school open - preparing young men for college and beyond - yes, some of his player have/will make a living playing basketball but almost all will make a good living with a college education and break the cycle of broken homes, welfare, lack of education, and hopeless future that they came out of.

This dvd is about the true story of a man trying to use basketball to clean up the streets. He uses his insight to inspire and encourage at-risk teens to clean up their "stink'n think'n" and take responsibility for their life choices. This documentary also infuses a LOT of real life basketball facts and history. A very educational and inspiring dvd.

I first saw this on PBS. I was so moved by this documentary that I searched for a copy. I was determined to share it with others and I have. I never knew about Coach Hurley, but I admire him and all he continues to do. A true hero and what we need more of.

This is a documentary about Coach Hurley and some of the other staff at St Anthony High School. Coach Hurley is an old-school, tough love coach who gets results. He has an incredible record of winning teams and players getting signed.In the tough area of the city where Hurley works, he's seen too many young people "lost to the streets", so his desire is to give them a future. Even though he's known as a basketball coach, his focus is about life skills --- being dedicated, committed, hard working, being a team player, giving and supporting and leading, having an education, etc. He has a tough love approach and doesn't accept excuses, and demands the players keep up their good grades.It is a very inspirational film, as we see the impact he has on these kids. He is saving kids from the streets, hence the title of the film. Funny, I can't see teachers today being allowed to say and do the things he does, but I agree they work and are needed in these situations.To whom do I recommend this film? My brother-in-law (himself a coach) and other coaches I know all love this film. Basketball players of all ages love this film. Anyone who plays any team sport seriously should see this film. Anyone who enjoys biographies of admirable, motivational people will like this too.The reason I deducted one star is that my wife and I feel it goes on too long - it could have been significantly shorter and got the same message across without sacrificing any of the emotional impact.If you like this film, read the book "Miracle at St Anthony".
