A Psimple Psaltery: Building a Bowed Psaltery, From Start to Finish

Written by an engineer (looks like it anyway) rather than a luthier. I had a few questions about his construction notes and I've built plenty of other instruments. (This was my first psaltery). Holes for any type of construction need to be drawn and described from center to center rather than between the holes as the author did. String gauges need to be prescribed rather than his recommendation of finding scrap wire and stripping it down. I finally got it built (after stringing it with much to heavy gauge piano wire) and it sounds very nice. I used maple sides and bottom and a quartersawn spruce soundboard.

The book is well-written and gives you enough detail to get going on your first build. Like any project you might need to fill in the blanks here and there but that's the fun of woodworking.

I am in the process of building a psaltery using this book. It is very well written with large print that is easy to read. This book is the finest how to book I have ever purchased and I highly recommend it whether you are an amateur or pro woodworker.

i own a gorgeous psaltery and it has an amazingly lovely, haunting sound. i don't play it well .... mostly "play at it". purchased the book for my son who has expressed interest in building a psaltery. the verdict is not yet in ..... he hasn't yet started .... but i anticipate that he will glean much useful data from this book.

Much better design and construction than any other psaltry book I've seen. Shows a lot of thought and knowlege of string dynamics .I'm a physics instructor as well as luthier, so I appreciate the knowlege of priciples he shows.

great little book, with clear instructions - but if you are in the UK check you can find the wood you need before you consider the book!
