Great alternative to the UniFi products
I'd become a big Ubiquiti fan but wanted, in a new smaller home, an all-in-one device after my Edgerouter Lite died, so with hesitation I went with this product. Good call. Several improvements over the web interface compared to the ERL, in my opinion, including a simple thing like being able to update itself without having to download an image and upload it to the ERL yourself. It's handled switching for my gigabit devices so far, and the wireless coverage seems comparable to or slightly better than the Unifi AC Lite. The price is great, too. Mikrotik seems to have a good track record for providing software updates as well, so I don't expect this to be abandoned any time soon with security holes agape. On the downside, it's no more user friendly to non-networking professionals than Ubiquiti products are, which is to say it can be intimidating. Unlike the ERL, however, this did ship to me with a default configuration that would allow most people to plug-and-play (it was setup to simply start piping the internet to your LAN if plugged in to a modem on eth1). So it's not for mom and pop, however you can set it up for mom and pop and know you won't likely get a phone call about internet woes, at least not one due to this device (or the ERL, if you go that route).Personally, I'd never buy a consumer-grade networking device again after using this and, in the past, the Edgerouter. Far more reliable, better update track records, and consistent performance.

Basic setup is easy, a bit of a learning curve if you want more
First, let me say that this router has no trouble handling most modern broadband speeds. I suppose if your connection is faster than 1 Gb/s, you'll need some exotic network hardware to take advantage of it so keep looking. I received occasional notices from my cable provider that they had increased my connection speed, but I couldn't seem to connect much faster than about 20 Mb/s. Thought I had a computer issue, but my new work laptop that connected at 60 Mb/s at work ran at only 20 here. On a hunch, I briefly connected it directly to the modem. Bang! 100 Mb/s as advertised. Turned out the culprit was my router. It was a few years old, though not exactly pre-historic. Since we use various Mikrotik routers and switches at work, I decided to order this one from Amazon. Night and day difference! The basic setup (Quick Set) is quite simple if you've set up a router before. Put in your passwords, change the IP if you like and go. For anything more advanced (e.g. port forwarding and the like) you go to the WebFig tab or use the (free) WinBox software. It's a bit more tweaky than the usual consumer stuff, but it wasn't that bad to learn, even for an old guy like me. The throughput is fast, we haven't had any crashes or lockups. The dual-band WiFi covers my small house nicely but not much signal outside. Maybe that's not a bad thing; keeps the neighbors out of it. If you need more coverage, these can be daisy chained together as one port supports POE. Mikrotik also makes a higher powered router /access point. There are plenty of forums online where one can find Mikrotik support. Most of the questions I had had already been asked and answered. One thing I found a bit surprising is in a world where everything comes from China, Mikrotik is made in Latvia.

Good default config for consumer home use. Fantastic router for prosumer if you know your networking.
Installed the router yesterday to replace my Cisco 1841 that had a loud fan. So far I am pleased. I would even go as far as to recommend this as a consumer router as it comes configured well enough out of the box to not even needing to login, save for changing the wifi keys maybe and the admin password.I needed to change the inside IP prefix to avoid renumbering my home devices that have static IPs and that was a bit scary if only for the reasons that since there is no console, changing the IP kicks you out of the router and if you do it wrong, you are SOL. With that said, I don't know if the "reset button" on the side resets the config to defaults.I had to mess around a bit with understanding how the DHCP ties in, but it's super similar to Cisco after grasping the terminology.IPv6 was odd. I'm not sure if that was a result of the software update I did, but the package was disabled after software update. To enable it, I had to reload the router and then everything was fine. So, in summary, default config is good enough for average consume. Changing things is a bit tricker than your regular linksys and as others stated, you need to know what you are, at least, trying to do, leave alone doing. Luckily the documentation is solid and plenty of forum results to answer all of my questions or at least set me on the right path (most of which was just grasping under which sub menu a given setting is).

You can configure anything
Powerfull and cheap router. We use it as a local DNS/DHCP server. The local DNS needs a special script to automatically add DHCP clients, but can be done.

No problem if your sold a proper one
First one I have received was from a very old batch (74: mac address). Don’t know why they were still on sale. I noticed a squeaky noise when using 5GHz Wifi. Looking up on mikrotik forum revealed a known issue for the early ones in 2018. So ordered a replacement which by luck or because the seller knew what’s the crack and realised they can’t sell me the old left overs was from the 48: mac address also having a mich newer RouterOS. The later has no noise and also much better throughput on WiFi.Apart of the small glitch, they do the job as per Mikrotik expectations and hoping to last for a few years.

Mikrotik promosso a pieno.
