I have lost my thumb screw for this anchor. where can you buy just the thumb screw for this anchor?

I doubt you can. But your best option is to request one from the manufacturer.

The anchor works well in sand and soft dirt. It’s at least 10” long and twists easily.

Will this work in the soil as well?

it will take considerably more effort to screw this into dirt rather than sand - you can't screw it into rocky soil or soil with a lot of rocks and other stuff - you could take a small shovel, dig a small hole, sift the rocks and stuff out, then put the soil back and tamp it - but no real advantage there - hope that helped
