Human not so happy, mice approve
I have pet mice and have purchased Critter Trail, Habitrail, and JW Pet Company cages, and this cage has the cheapest construction. Some plastic edges were sharp and unfinished, the tubes don't snap together but rather the halves have to be held together and secured with a plastic ring, and one tube didn't come together properly due to extra plastic left on from the manufacturing process that wasn't sanded off. Some wires in the cage weren't soldered securely and were loose and sharp. The plastic top and botton didn't fit to the wire middle very smoothly and the whole contraption had to be wrestled together. There were no instructions per se, just pictures on the outside of the box, and with a little patience, I got the thing together. There was a large crack in the plastic base, big enough for a mouse to get her tiny foot caught, as the cage was mailed in its box nestled in a much larger box without, alas, any cushioning packing material. The little water bottle is cute and looks sturdy enough, but has a strong plastic odor and is made in China, and I just don't want to risk exposing the mice to some noxious plastic byproduct. The cage has 2 wheels, a big plus. Unfortunately the the regular wheel that snaps on the cage bars would need skinnier bars to attach to, as it deforms the bars and hangs down, making it rub against the plastic pan when it turns. I corrected the angle by forcing some cardboard underneath the top of the turn screw, lifting the wheel enough to avoid contact with the side of the cage. It's location fortunately covered up the crack in the base so that it wouldn't be a hazard to the mice. The cute ball-shaped wheel has 2 trapezoid-shaped opening that rotate quickly when the mouse runs in it, and I had images of little mouse heads flying after inadvertantly poking them into the spinning openings whilst a companion was running in the ball. Sure enough, early on, Zeke stuck his head inside the round wheel while Oreo was running full-speed, and he quickly pulled out, shaking his head, and didn't attempt the maneuver again.I was going to write a scathingly negative review last night after putting the contraption together, but decided to see what the mice's opinions were. They found both wheels interesting and used them, especially the round one on top. Whether a serious injury can result from the whirling openings of the ball wheel remains to be seen, I'll trust in the natural intelligence and caution of the mouse. Overall, I'm disappointed in the overall quality of the cage. The mice not so much.
