Q: Why should I get one of these vs a rack based storage?

We have had the 12 drive version of the DiskStation in our IT rack sitting on a standard rack shelf. We felt this installation left all our options open. We have had this unit in constant operation for over 4 years. Not even a hiccup. We have numerous late night power outages that drained the UPS. Sometimes we got into the office fast enough to start up the generator. Other times the DiskStation went down hard. I have stood in the dark as the power comes back and the DiskStation automatically goes into rebuild. Went out for breakfast and and the NAS was back on-line like it never really happened.

Q: Are western digital 2tb wd20ezrx green drives compatible with the ds1817+??

I did not see it on the list of tested drives on the synology HCL, but i never had any issues with drives. for the HCL, see here: https://www.synology.com/en-global/compatibility?search_by=products&model=DS1817%2B&category=hdds&p=1

Q: When buying the ds1817+ (8tb) package, what brand and model is the hard drive that comes with this nas?

That is 8GB (not 8TB) of RAM. No hard drives are included.

Q: Can i install a memory of 16gb in addition to the ssd expansion slot?

Yes you can install to sticks of 8gb totalling 16gb of ram in the ram slot area on the bottom. You can also add ssd m.2 drives on the m.2 card located on the right side of the nas. This is used for ssd cashe. You can also put ssd in the drove bays instead of hard drives.
