Is it really the 2017, because the price is higher most places

I'm not sure about that but at this price you get a lot for your money, it comes in a red box. I used this yesterday surf fishing I was surprised how smooth this reel is in part because of the main gear where the handle is screwed in is much larger than reels in this class and smooth as silk, Bass pro shops and others sell the Diawa product at a much higher price it's about how much profit they need to make.Remember Amazon has the best return policy in the industry which I have used in the past.
