Does what its supposed to do
I bought this because I needed a step up ring to make the Nikon R1 speedlight work with my 90mm Tamron Macro Lens and it works really well. You need this for the R1 system because it only comes with adapters for lens with the following filter thread sizes: 52mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, and 77mm. My 90mm Tamron macro has a 55mm filter thread size.I cant tell if its made of plastic or metal but it seems sturdy enough for everyday use. All in all, it a great product in my opinion. Now I have a 62mm Nikon lens cap on order so I can leave the step up ring on the lens at all times.

It gets the job done
This Kenko step-up ring attaches to the front of any lens that takes 55mm filters (which isn't one of the more common sizes), and makes it possible to attach 58mm filters instead (which are quite common). This can be useful if you happen to have 58mm filters that you bought for some other lens, and you don't want to buy a set of 55mm filters. The Kenko step-up ring is no larger than it needs to be, fits into place well, and does exactly what it's supposed to do.One thing to be aware of is that when a step-up ring is installed on a lens, the lens's cap will not fit. If you intend to just leave the step-up ring on the lens, you should buy a 58mm lens cap to substitute for the original 55mm cap.

It is nice step ring itself
It is nice step ring itself. Unfortunately picture of ring is wrong. This ring has not ribbed outside. Here is photo of actual ring I received:

It does the work
Not really much to say it works and works well. I did not find any problems with it. Easy to carry in your bag.

Wrong Size, Twice
I'm sure the ring is fine, but I got a 52-62mm Step Up instead of 52-55mm. I sent it back for a replacement and got another 52-62mm.The printed label on both of the boxes says 52-55mm, but the numbering on the box itself is 52-62. I believe there's a batch that was just mislabeled.

Works well but a little thin. Has a tendancy to be hard to unscrew and not enough material to get a good grip.
