Not forward compatible.
You need to *SOMEHOW* get a hold of a non-Oreo Android phone to update the firmware on the controller. Is this REALLY the appropriate way to maintain the device in future versions? It's obvious that in time, any device below 8.0 is uncommon. It would require an unnecessary epic quest to find someone who's yet to update their device, to then ask to borrow it to flash a firmware.Recommendation:Make a Windows/OSX/Linux bluetooth app to flash the thing, instead of all this hacky nonsense.

A real nightmare to use as Day Dream controller! (if it's even possible)
Yep, another Android 8/Note 8 here looking to use it as a DayDream - I read the reviews - I knew I needed to download an update. I even found a link to (the?) an update - I tried using both my Samsung Tab 4 and my other Samsung phone, I forget the name of the model it's SM-J320V but for sure has Android 7.1.1 on it. On the one Samsung Tab if I didn't have the download on my google drive - I could not get to it to update. Once I did I received an error stating the file was probably corrupt. Or something. So I figured, Ok, hey...maybe they were serious about the instructions and I need to use a phone??? that's when I got the J320v - I will be darned if I can get to the file. I'm not stupid here. I've rooted Androids before. I've been working with technology since 1989 - but the file needed to be in some mysterious directory that I could not figure out the location. In the download directory - all the files were greyed out - in other words inaccessible. I tried copying it to documents, root, DCIM, and a few other directories. I have no idea what directory the OTK program is looking for - but I'm guessing if I ever found it - I'd get the same error message telling me the file is corrupt. How can this company advertise this remote as Day Dream compatible yet leave little or no instructions on how to update it - or have a program that is incomprehensible to use - because you have to figure out that it wants your file in a "certain" directory - but who knows where. If the Business Virtoba wants us to buy their products at a cheaper price - please BACK IT UP with SUPPORT!!!

Will not update, so useless.
An update is required to use this with my Pixel 2XL. The update has to be done using an Android phone or tablet that has older version of Android. I used my Samsung tablet, downloaded the OTA app and the file for the update. The OTA app see my Virtoba S1 controller and the file uploads to 100%, but then gives an error message, says the upload failed. Tried several times. Tried resetting controller. So, the controller is useless to me. Will probably return it. Update - returned to Amazon, refund already issued.

Pixel Phone running Android 8.1 required a firmware update
Pixel Phone running Android 8.1 required a firmware update. Update required another phone that was running Android 6.0 in order to run the firmware update. Once the update was installed the controller appears to be operating correctly with the Pixel Android 8.1 phone.

Might be Defective Product
Might be a defective one that I got but it said it was charged after a full night on charger. I wanted to get my VR set going so purchased samsung one from Best Buy locally. When plugging in it would drop connection in a few seconds. After about an hour of trying to fix this issue it told me battery might be dead. I did everything suggested from the forums. Uninstalled everything, reinstalled... nothing worked...NOTE: I have a Note 8 with oreo which there seems to be a known issues with this combo.... purchased full Samsung Oculus set no issue!!!!

the controller paired easily following the instructions by pressing the Home button
Using Google VR Services on my Samsung Galaxy S8+, the controller paired easily following the instructions by pressing the Home button. Run the Daydream app, however, and it cannot recognize the controller. Interesting that the app waits until I press the Home button before it tells me it cannot connect to the controller. Hmmmm...suspicious. Run Fulldrive VR app and it also cannot recognize the controller. I'm convinced the controller is a piece of trash. I scanned the little bar code in the user's guide and retrieved the update but when I ran it...it ALSO didn't recognize any freaking controller. What is this garbage? What a waste of money. Do not purchase this fake controller.

Avoid unless you are tech savvy
Piece of garage, worked one day. I have a pixel and from the other reviews and stuff I've read online it needs a firmware upgrade, well I don't have an older Android phone to complete the process. Guess I will just have to buy the proper controller. If. Unless you are a tech guru I'd avoid this controller.
