usually it works well if add a metal ring when case is non-magsafe. but it depends on case's weight and material. Otterbox defender case is thick and heavy, sincerely hope you can have a try and let us know the result, thank you.

Q: how do you take the gimbal off of the magnetic ring when you are finished recording.

There are 2 ways to do that: 1. Press magnetic ring's tail, gently take off gimbal. 2. take phone off firstly from magnetic ring , then can easily take gimbal off .

Q: Can you rotate the iPhone between landscape and portrait orientations or are you limited to landscape only?

The gimbal rotates the iPhone mechanically. You can position the MagSafe clamp horizontally or vertically but the it attaches firmly in the vertical orientation.
