Q: how deep is the door portion overall? Concerned about having wide enough space to open to an adequate degree.

It's 3 inches deep. Ours is 5 inches from the wall giving more than enough space. This pantry has really helped with storage in our kitchen.

You’d have to sand it down to make the new paint stick but I don’t see why not.
