August 19, 2024 Update: I love this board so much I bought another. If they made one in the same size but half the thickness I would buy it in a heartbeat, the weight is a blessing and a curse, you don't want the board to move around, but it is rather heavy to move especially from cupboard to countertop.The new board did not have the waxy varnish on it like the first board, which I really appreciate, if I want that on my board, I will do it myself. Since buying the first board I have found Wood Master's Secret oil and conditioner which I highly recommend. It penetrates and seals the wood, lasts up to 3 months of heavy use and there is less oily residue on your countertop.Original review: This board has everything I wanted, the most important being the long end grain pieces of teak, then the size and the craftmanship.It is absolutely gorgeous right out of its beautiful gift box, I can't keep my hands off it, it's one of the most beautiful boards I've ever seen.There is one drawback, in my opinion and that's because it is finished with a waxy food safe varnish which protects it and makes a for great presentation but will start to wear off as soon as you cut on it. If like me, you love this board and intend to really use it and don't like the varnish, a light sanding with 80 grit sandpaper will take it right off. Rinse, dry, sand with 320 grit and repeat these steps until the grain quits rising and the board is smooth, then finish with 400 grit or #0000 steel wool, wear gloves when handling steel wool. I've never met a cutting board that didn't need a little sanding before being oiled and there are lots of YouTube videos to teach you how to prepare and maintain a new board.Teak is full of natural oil, the reason it makes such a good wood for boats, outdoor furniture and cutting boards, it is naturally water-resistant. The oil is orange to brown in color and it oozes from the wood after washing and when oiling it, so be sure to use rags or old towels when working with it. It will lessen over time, but I always use an old or dark colored towel to dry mine. Also, it has an earthy smell which will fade away after several washings. Like any other raw wood, the appearance will darken when oiled, mine turned a lovely medium brown with four coats of mineral oil and a coat of beeswax.I have a couple smaller teak boards,16x11x.75, made with the long end pieces and they have proven to be the most durable of all my cutting boards and I have many. They are easy on my knives, there are very few knife marks, no cracking or warping after years of use, they are the perfect small boards, but I was always looking for one in a bigger size, now my search is over, this is my dream board.It is big 20" x15" x 1.5", it has a 5/8" wide juice grove and man-sized finger slots that are 5/8" wide, 5.25" long, about 3/8" deep, very handy because this thing weighs 13.8 pounds, this board stays in place, easy to handle on the countertop, but very heavy to lift from the cupboard to the countertop.I'm going to love this board forever!
