We drop it in the washing machine with the rest of his clothes and it stays in tact. It's been through at least 10 washes and looks/feels exactly the same. We NEVER dry it in the dryer through. ONLY hang to dry.

Should I order one size lower to the exact size of the child?

NO!!! the size fit perfect. My child Sofia is 9 years old and she measures 4' 59" (140 cm) and the size L was perfect!
