Q: Can this be modified to attach a chain?

The wooden top of the fixture is not designed to connect to a chain.

Q: Can this be used with a sloped ceiling?

Off hand, I don't see why not, but that's a guess.

Q: I can't for the life of me figure out how to shorten the wire for the length of the pendant. Anyone know how to do this?

If it’s only a short amount, you might be able to stuff it in the electrical box. Otherwise you’ll have to cut the cord to desired length.
