Red led light for astronomy.
I bought this lamp to use whilst stargazing. For this purpose it has been very good so far, I've had it for about a month in daily use, sometimes for long periods of several hours. It is necessary to cycle though the bright white light to get to the red, and this needs care if you are to keep your night vision but has not been a problem since I realised this. In use I usually turn it on then if I don't need it I leave it on in my pocket, or pushed around facing behind whilst still on my head. It is a bright red led, I have not tried putting masking tape over the lens to knock down the brightness but I am aware this can be done, I'll add material on this if I find I have to do it. One of the reasons I bought it was it's small size, and it is light and unobtrusive in use, though for my XXL crash helmet sized head it's a little tight. I also use the white led, this is powerful and has a long reach, but for walking it's beam is a bit too concentrated, not enough light scattering to give general illumination close to the feet. If I wanted it for just this I might doctor the lens, but it is not as good for this purpose as (say) a Petzel Duo or Tikka. Another reason I bought it was for the battery management system, and this seems to be very good indeed. As I say I have been using it daily for about a month and I have not noticed any dimming, this on a single AA battery. I'm going to give it five stars because it's small, light, has a red led good for my purpose and the management system works well. If I wanted it for walking I would give it four because of the white light spread, but if you want one for this, or for general night work with white light, I'd suggest a multi-led lamp anyway just to get the scattered light you need. For backyard stargazing, highly recommended. An update at one year on, nearly. Still glad I bought it, still working perfectly and the battery management system continues to be very pleasing. Scratching to the main white lens from use has helped to scatter the output and in fact it is more useful with this wear than without. Definitely recommended.Update at July 2013. Still in more or less daily use, still just as happy as I was when last reviewing. Good for astronomy, good for getting about in the dark, battery management is still giving me a sneaking pleasure.

The headlight is light and comfortable. It doesn't feel like you have a brick ...
A quick "to the point review".The headlight is light and comfortable. It doesn't feel like you have a brick on your forehead! The strap is soft and flexible, with adequate adjustment. The body of the light is about 2 fingers widths wide and about an index finger in length (about 1 and 1/3 the size of an "AA" battery"). The light direction is adjustable in click-able steps. The coverage of the white light is more concentrated in a beam than a wide spread. The light has 4 functions, which are accessible by pressing the only button (on/off switch). It has 2 lights, a white LED and a Red LED. There are 4 modes in this order: High white beam, Low white beam, Red LED (Constant), Red LED (Flashing). You access the required mode by pressing the on/off switch several times in quick succession. EG: Red LED you would press 3 times quickly. Once the required is activated for a short while, another press of the on/off button will turn the light off. It does no remember the last settings, so you are required to cycle through the above order again to get to the on you want. The white light is bright and useful for both working in dark places / under sinks etc or outside in the dark. The AA battery (Supplied) fits via a grey screw cap which is easily removed by a twisting motion. The cap stays locked into place and there is no hint it would work loose. I cannot comment on battery life yet. This is a very good, lightweight and bright head torch and a recommend it!

so fits in a pocket easily. the beam is more of a spot beam ...
This head torch works really well. It is very small and light, so fits in a pocket easily. the beam is more of a spot beam than a wide beam, I would prefer it to be a bit wider, but that is my preference. The upside of this is that it illuminates a fair distance in front of you. The ratchet that controls the hinge (that allows the angle of the torch to be changed) feels a bit weak compared to other head torches I have used, I often change the angle accidentally when removing it off my head (I have had no problems when it is in use though). The battery life seems to be quite good, considering it only uses one AA battery

THE BEST HEAD TORCH I HAVE EVER BOUGHT !!!
I put these around the necks (not too tight though) of my Irish Setters so I can see them when out at night, that way I don't have to carry a torch around to find out where they are. These are a much better alternative to those pathetic 'Dog collar Lights' on the market. The head angles, and my dogs have figured out they can lift their heads they can scan around for anything that might take their fancy (usually Rabbits etc)I have 4 of these now, the other 2 I have fixed to the roof bars of my VW T5 Camper so when I get back from a wet walk with the dogs I can illuminate the outside of the van while I dry them.I love the fact they take just 1 single AA Battery so no having to buy a pack of 4 for those stupid headlights that take 3 x AAABattery lasts ages too.Brilliant white light....... or steady Red ........or flashing RedQuinny

lit my way
Comfortable to wear and good light spread. Battery life is good.My only minor quibble is that you have to go through the bright white light settings to get to the red.A question I always find useful. Would I buy it again with the power of hindsight. Yes! and i might be doing soon as I've lost it.

Must cycle through white to get to red.
Hi, I bought this to use on a yacht. I need both white and red. It is a good light but to get to red you must always cycle through the white light. This ruins your night vision before you get the night vision friendly red LED.

Not bad for the money i paid, small, compact and lightweight, and best of all only needs 1 AA battery.
