If only he had complied with the cop, he might be alive today, pundits say in the aftermath of the latest shooting of an unarmed black man. Or, Maybe he shouldn’t have worn that hoodie … or, moved more slowly … not been out so late … Wait, why are black people allowed to drive, anyway? With so much heartfelt guidance flying around, it seems there’s been a failure to communicate. This isn’t a new phenomenon. White people have been giving “advice” for as long as anyone can remember. They’ve been fucking with black folks for about as long, telling them how to pick cotton, where to sit on a bus, what neighborhood to live in, when they can vote, and how to wear our pants. Despite centuries of whites’ advice, it seems black people still aren’t listening, and the results are tragic. Now, at last, activist-comedian D. L. Hughley offers How Not to Get Shot, an illustrated how-to guide for black people, full of insight from white people, translated by one of the funniest black dudes on the planet. In these pages you will learn how to act, dress, speak, walk, and drive in the safest manner possible. You also will finally understand the white mind. It is a book that can save lives. Or at least laugh through the pain. Are you ready to not get shot? Let’s go! Read more See all Editorial Reviews

"How Not to Get Shot" is a MUST READ for all races!
This book is a gift to everyone who reads it. It will make you think, it will make you laugh and it will make you talk about race. D.L. is a masterful wordsmith and keeps a perfect balance between satire and the painful truth of rampant racism in our country. I love D.L.'s writing style -- it's like he's sitting right next to you, having a conversation and sharing his provocative insights. This timely book is a perfect catalyst to begin crucial conversations about race and I highly recommend that everyone read "How Not to Get Shot" and start talking. I've bought copies for family, friends, and work colleagues. I strongly encourage you to go out -- right now -- and buy this book and read it.

DL is a genius at using satire to shine a light on an uncomfortable and disturbing reality. Great summertime, or anytime read. His storytelling has me laughing out loud at every turn.

I just started reading this but so far I think the book might make my grandsons see this country a different way. I've already lived this and no matter what anyone says black people will never be free from the lynching

Solid.
Solid. Got the audiobook, and liked Hughley reading it himself. It added to context, especially as a humor piece. He's a good comedian who takes a subject that's hard to talk about and breaks it down into a digestible, pleasant experience. As a white woman who grew up in a black neighborhood, I highly recommend whites give this title a try if you're looking for some illumination. I hope other whites will find this book good at not making them feel defensive, and that they will listen for "huh, never thought of that," moments. Would buy again, and would recommend to anyone I know.

A Short List of Crucial Advice
This book is best enjoyed if: A.) You know who D.L. Hughley is. B.) You are familiar with his comedy. C.) You like D.L. Hughley’s comedy. I can check the box for all three. At 260 pages it would seem like this book is long and going to take a while to read. I read it in a day. Firstly, the book is only about 6” X 6”. Secondly, there are large margins on the pages. Thirdly, there are illustrations and pictures that fill pages. Lastly, it is very light and easy reading.D.L., in comedic fashion, lists the various “advice” given by white people over the years that should presumably prevent black people from getting shot by the police. While mentioning the "advice" he pretends to advocate it while also pointing out the hypocrisies and even the near impossibility of adhering to some of this advice and still avoid getting shot. While the majority of the book was steeped in comedy there were many nuggets of truth in there along with actual facts. If you can get past the profanity and the gratuitous use of the N-word it is quite enjoyable. I’m not saying that’s easy for everyone—nor am I saying it should be—but if you want to have a laugh while reading very dire stuff then this is a good book for that.
