Silverline465991 Fore Plane No. 6 60 x 2.4 mm Blade

No, I don't mean the sole is a banana. On the contrary, it's more than flat enough and well within woodworking tolerances.I paid £16.85 for this plane just before Christmas and it's worth every penny. Solidly built, nice heavy weight and comfortable to hold. Like the #3 Faithfull I've reviewed, a quick skim on the whetstone and polish up on the wet & dry and the blade was good to go. About 20 minutes overall fettling time and I'm flattening and squaring out stock. The blade is a good 3mm thick and plenty sturdy.If you don't know how to set up a plane before use, please don't slag the product off on here - check out YouTube for instructional videos. Even £800+ hand planes aren't ready to use out of the box.

So after doing the customary blade sharpening and reassemble, I discovered the thread was the wrong size for the bolt fitted, resulting in the thread being easily ripped out when the cam leaver is operated. I decided to rework this poor engineering, and drilled and tapped out the hole to a common metric size, before fitting a suitable bolt. The repair was a success, and the plane is at last usable.

The first one of these planes that i received was broken across the throat due to inadequate packaging but amazon replaced it FOC and the second one arrived intact. For the money the plane is excellent. The sole plate is perfectly flat and the right hand side is at a perfect 90 degrees to the sole plate. The left side is off about 10 degrees but as I'm right handed it wont make any difference to me. The blade arrived sharp but after honing it was razor sharp. I can't praise this plane enough, after setting up it is wonderful, a joy to use and for the money and absolute steal.

I have no doubt some of these handplanes are ok but ordered three different ones a no4 no5 and a no6 needless to say all three have been sent back as they where very rubbish the handle of on was falling off and on two of them there was no way to adjust the blade very poor.

After a lot of honing and flattening I have a plane that works very well. Handle is small and flimsy though. Setting the blade could be more precise but in general I am happy with it.

The plane came out of the box with an almost perfectly flat sole and with a 5 minute honing of the iron, it easily produced wafer-thin shavings. The plane feels well-built and the weight of it means it powers through difficult grain and knots. Definitely recommended for those who don't want to spend a fortune but still need good performance

Got this plane very quickly, but was disappointed with the fitting and general finish. It was very cheap though but I wasn't prepared to spend a lot of time on trying to correct the inaccuracies of the casting, so Amazon to their credit allowed me to do an exchange for a Faithfull plane which was dearer but much more accurate. Full marks to Amazon for their customer service.
