Ramayana: The Epic is an Indian computer-animated film directed by Chetan Desai. Although the original was created in Hindi, several regional versions of this film were created and screened during Dussehra, including the languages Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. The Hindi voice-over cast includes Manoj Bajpai, Juhi Chawla, and Ashutosh Rana in leading roles.The story tells the epic tale of Lord Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, his devoted and riotous brother Laxman, and his kind and devout wife Sita. Political issues in the kingdom force the reincarnated god and his family to move to the forests, despite Rama being the rightful heir to the throne. During their 14-year tenure in the forests, they come to encounter the forces of the demon king Ravana. Their encounters start first from Ravana’s sister Surpanakha, who tries to seduce the brothers but is fatally wounded. The next encounter is from the demon king himself, who uses his cunning and guile to abduct Sita and bring her back to his kingdom. An epic war ensues thereafter, with Lord Rama using all his allies and even his own might and skill to bring down the evil king Ravana and rescue his wife from the demon’s clutches.The animated film has been the second production of Warner Bros using a local production team in India. The film received praise for its above-par animation style, which is a revelation in India, along with the quality of dialogue. The music and accompanying voice cast adds to the quality of the film. Ramayana was released in 2010 by Excel Home Entertainment in DVD format with a total run time of 100 minutes. It is rated U, is shot in Hindi, and comes with English subtitles.
