Works with some quirks
Bottom Line - When used with the Chromecast in a video-only setting, this device works for the most part, but can be a bit touchy. The biggest issues seem to stem from the stability (or lack thereof) of the connecting ports. There isn't a very good way to secure the VGA connection in place, and if it gets bumped, it can cause issues with the connection and/or picture quality. Overall, it works for me 95% of the time, and the other 5% usually just requires a reboot of the Chromecast or a manual readjustment of the cables.I see from other reviews that the Chromecast functionality seems to be in question, but I will give me experience with this device.I use this to hook my Chromecast up to an old projector that only has a VGA hookup. ***I only need video, so I have had no need to try or test the audio functionality of this device when paired with a Chromecast***. This project is ceiling mounted at a height of about 16', so I wanted to reduce cables and increase the flexibility of what I could connect to the projector. The Chromecast seemed like the perfect solution. What I have found is that in general, it works. I have had some hiccups where the picture will not show up, and I have had some other issues with a pink stripe down the left side of the image (a transparent pink stripe, not solid, so the image is still visible, but the color is messed up). Usually the fix is to readjust the VGA cable heading into the device or readjust the device itself. Sometimes a power cycle of the Chromecast helps. In all cases, I have never found a fatal error that cannot be fixed by a simple solution. There are issues, which warrants deducting a star, in my opinion, but this product is definitely worth it still, in my opinion.

great for pi zero. works with hdmi selector. potential RCA on VGA screens.
I bought this to turn my old Acer monitor that I replaced into a bedroom entertainment center. This does exactly what it's supposed to do. I use a 3 port hdmi switch. I have hooked up to it, an RCA to hdmi adapter with a wireless receiver plugged into it feeding TV from the living room to the bedroom. An Android MxQ tv box. And a raspberry pi zero. The thing works excellent and if I would have known these existed earlier I'd have done so much more with my monitors. Someone showed how the vga ripped off on their unit but I haven't had any looseness or trouble disconnecting it. I'd imagine if you yanked the thing somewhat hard, it might fall apart. But normal disconnecting is easy and there is no reason to abruptly pull. I've had no looseness at all and it doesn't feel flimsy to me. I do have to press the autoadjust button when I switch between the sources but that's no problem. I'm giving it five out of five because it has audio out, that is so boss it's not even funny. Really good for a raspberry pi zero. I recommend in the /boot/config.txt setting a custom resolution appropriate to your monitor, it worked really well that way for me with this thing. This is really the guts of my bedroom operation and it preforms amazingly. Good idea whoever made this. Works great if you know what you're doing
First off, for the people wanting to use this with Chromecast to JUST output sound, you need to plug a vga cable in and connect the other end to your tv or computer for it to work, it won't work by just plugging the Chromecast into it. You can also short out 2 of the pins, Google search which ones because I don't know off hand, and it'll work that way, too. Now that we got that out of the way, this worked perfectly for what I wanted. I have it going from my Chromecast to the 3.5mm jack to the back of my Sansui receiver's aux input so I can stream music wirelessly from my iPhone. Unfortunately, a lot of good, i.e. FLAC music apps, don't have casting functionality yet so I am stuck with Google Play for now. The downside is that you need to unplug this device from the Chromecast to be able to plug the Chromecast back into your HDMI port if you want to stream movies again, small price to pay, IMO. With that being said, I don't really notice a big degradation in quality with this, so that's definitely a plus. I'm very happy with this product as I impatiently wait for better iOS music apps to support Chromecast functionality.

Mnxo® HDMI Female to VGA
I love this little adapter and the audio cable supplied. Plug & play out of the box with a minor hitch. I use the adapter for projectors on my Dell PC and it is too big to fit the connector on the PC. I had to use a HDMI cable with it (that is why the 4 star rating). Outside of the additional cable works great. Oh, I haven't tried the sound but I haven't need it yet,

Don't use this for Chromecast, use........
For use with Chromecast......don't bother. I gave it 2 stars because it basically stopped working after 1 use. First of all if you're trying to get the audio out of the Chromecast, you have to have this thing plugged into a VGA monitor. But even with it plugged into a VGA monitor, I was able to get the full audio stream out of it one time. After unplugging and plugging back in, it never worked correctly again, only giving a blip of audio every 5 seconds or so.After this experience, I ordered the AGPtek audio extractor/converter (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ECTHIKK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). This thinks works straight out of the box, you don't have to plug anything else into it, and you can get 5.1 surround out of it to boot. It's a little more than twice the cost ($27), but well worth it if that is what you intend to do with it.

Works great with chromecast
Works great with chromecast !!! Even without a montor. If you have a problem using it with a chromecast without a monitor know that the problem is the chromecast it needs a return signal from the vga port. The way to get around this is by using (3) 68 ohm resistors. This fools the chromecast into thinking that there is a monitor attached.
