Q: Do the bowls overheat if they're plugged in all day?

Not at all. I just purchased a bunch for the winter season, not knowing how they would work. Mine have been plugged in for about 2 weeks with temps in the 20's - 40's and the water just stays room temperature, it doesn't keep it hot. If you touch the under side of the bowls with a bare hand it just feels slightky warm, so there's just enough heat to keep the contents from freezing. I've not used them for wet food yet because my feral kitties eat it immediately and they have dry food for snacks between meals.

Q: Are replacement bowls available?

For the 12 oz (small size) these are available on Amazon and a perfect fit. The raccoons stole our original ones. Neater Pet Brands Stainless Steel Dog and Cat Bowls (2 Pack) Neater Feeder Deluxe or Express Extra Replacement Bowl (Metal Food and Water Dish) (1.5 Cup Deep)

Q: Won't the plastic crack in extreme cold? Eventually?

The plastic is thick and is also heated. I don’t think it will crack.

Q: It says not to use with an extension cord but an extension cord is the only way I can plug it in - can I use one or not?

MET requires that all manufacturers put the extension cord statement “Do not use with extension cord” on every item that is MET listed by UL 499 standards. MET suggests that an extension cord is not recommended as a permanent fixture and should only be a temporary solution when using any electrical product. Temporary use of a UL listed cord is fine, but consult your electrician for the proper cord for your application.
