Q: could this fireplace sit on a low unit instead of attached to the wall or is it not stable enough ? thanks

According to instructions, a gap of at least 200mm should be allowed between bottom of lower plinth and floor, but this is only to get to the plinth fixing screws when it is on the wall. If you fix the plinth first, it could be self standing. The air goes into the heater at the top so this wouldn't be a problem but you wouldn't be able to get to the cable storage compartment. The manufacturer's instructions specify a 200mm gap beneath the fire, so not adhering to this is your decision.
