Is it hard to get the old cardboard roll off when it’s empty?

No. Unscrew the knob (or whatever you want to call it) and the empty roller can be lifted off. What can be hard is if you have the holder under your cabinets —- you have to unstick the suction cups to have clearance to install a new roll.

What is the base measurement?

Mine are 6 1/4 inches diameter. Also I learned to put the toll of paper towels on the stand do the towels turn clockwise as you pull them off. I had a couple of them the post would unscrew from the base after a few weeks of use if I pulled them off counterclockwise.

Does it let you tear off two at a time when you want to?

Yes. This is a great holder.....lets you tear off as many as you want.

Does the base heavy enough to provide stability without the suction cups?

The base comes with suction cups. There is not an option without suction cups.
