Metamorphoses (Oxford Classical Texts) (Latin Edition)

The best edition yet
This is a first rate edition. Prof. Tarrant has provided an excellent edition of the Metamorphoses for Latin scholars.

The definitive Latin edition of the Met.
Bill Anderson's Teubner text was the standard for decades and is definitely good, but it relies very heavily on the main sources for the text of Ovid. This was partly due to his textual critical strategy and partly due to the fact that a man with a family can't very well wander all over of Europe inspecting less central manuscripts for months on end. The Vatican library is a long way from Berkeley after all, and there were no cell phones and email to keep in touch, when he was preparing the edition.Tarrant's OCT is more or less the scholarly standard now. If you are going to do serious work with the Met., this is the edition you want. That said, unless you're in grad school or otherwise plan on publishing, Anderson's school editions will do just fine.Anyone who wishes to get into the details of Tarrant vs. Anderson, can look up Possanza's excellent BMCR review online. Just google Bryn Mawr Classical Review and use the site's search function to find reviews mentioning "Tarrant."

Not great
I received this book today which had a torn and creased dust jacket. If I hadn't bought this for a Christmas present, I would have returned it.

The essential text
This is the essential text for serious study of Ovid's Metamorphoses. It contains a full apparatus criticus indicating textual variants and the manuscript tradition. There is however no commentary, so those only beginning to study the text who wish for linguistic aid and detailed notes would be better choosing texts edited by Hill (facing translation and basic notes) or Anderson (superb commentary).

A Great, New Edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses in a Cheap, Crappy Binding
R.J. Tarrant's edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses is a must-have for any Latin scholar. Tarrant, who has also published a remarkable book on the art and science of manuscript collation, consistently demonstrates the judiciousness, good sense, and solid reasoning that often eludes other editors. The wit and elegance of his Latin preface is alone worth the price of admission. The type face is clear, handsome, and easy to read. The hard covers are sturdy. My only complaint is the binding. It is a scandal and an outrage that Oxford should publish an edition of this importance with a flimsy glued spine that will not sustain the use it is certain to receive. A shame that this great edition is offered to the public in a cheap, crappy binding.
