I've had a Poulan XT (PXT16542) riding mower for 6 years now and was just happy to have a rider to cut my ~1 acre ...
Why oh why did I wait so long to buy this for my mower?! I've had a Poulan XT (PXT16542) riding mower for 6 years now and was just happy to have a rider to cut my ~1 acre lot with instead of a push mower. Was never really satisfied with the unevenness of the cut. I just tolerated it. I put the wheel kit on a few years back hoping that would solve the scalping problem but it did not. Bolted this cheap (plastic) roller on there and was skeptical about its quality and usability. Now, I cannot speak for its durability, but I can tell you that this has transformed my el-cheapo Poulan riding mower into a lawn manicuring machine. The cut is beautiful and even. No more "creases" up and down the length of my lawn because of uneven deck heights from side to side. It also keeps the blades off the ground when mowing over slightly uneven surfaces.Only time will tell how well this will hold up but if it lasts a reasonable amount of time I'll just purchase another one to replace it. If you have one of the cheaper riding mowers that has 2 connection points on the front of the deck this roller should work for you. I also recommend bolting on the wheel kit too. In unison these 3 items will allow your budget priced lawn tractor to cut your grass just as well as the much more expensive brands out there. Don't wait to buy this......you will be happy with the results!

Probably best to use common sense as if you start to ...
This fits the Ariens 42" cut riding mower. The package was shipped from Husquarva , so that tells you something as they manufacture this mower at their South Carolina plant. The front end of the mower deck has two brackets that have both a round hole and a square hole. The supplied brackets with this kit bolt directly into the round hole with the portion of the bracket stuck into the square hole, which fits perfectly as you tighten the bolt and nut (supplied with kit). Then, just bolt in the roller between the brackets and you're ready to go. The bottom of the roller will be about +1" below the bottom of the mower deck. This should be about right for avoiding scalping. There is no further adjustment. IF you're mowing very uneven areas, you should consider the anti-scalping wheels to help further. Probably best to use common sense as if you start to go over a raised stump the roller will go over it and avoid digging in with the roller, BUT, you're then going to come down on the stump with the blades and very possibly cause serious damage.

Will not bolt on without modification
I have a 38" Deck Poulan. The model is PXT12538. The bracket that the nose roller brackets mount to will not accept them because of a tab on the nose roller brackets. This tab, according to the instructions, should fit into a slot that is not present on the mower deck brackets. The hole that the single bolt that holds each bracket in place is there and does position the nose roller in the perfect location. I put a cut-off wheel on my dremel tool and cut the tab off of the nose roller brackets. Without this tab you have to position the height of the nose roller manually and tighten the brackets in place. Without this tab you will have to periodically check the adjustment of the nose roller to make sure it hasn't moved. I don't expect that it will move much if at all because of how tight I torqued it down and the fact that the hardware included lock-nuts which was nice. There are fancy cotter pins that hold the bars that stabilize the front of the deck in the brackets on the front of the deck. I removed these cotter pins and installed the nose roller brackets with the nut on the inside of the brackets. Having the bolt head instead of the nut on the outside of the bracket allowed me to reinsert the factory cotter pins. They went in differently than they were originally but cotter pins work either way, the direction they face doesn't matter. After the install I lowered my mower deck to its lowest setting and drove around my yard in the places that my deck would get caught to test the nose roller. It worked perfectly. My mower drove smoothly over the areas of my lawn where tree roots surfaced and didn't seem to mind it one bit. Before the nose roller was installed the roots would catch the deck and bring the mower to dead stop every time. If you have a little 'handyman' in you then it should be no problem for you to install.Brother Elo

Does not fit new Poulan Pro 42 inch mower.
brand new Poulan Pro 42 inch mower. bought it 2 weeks ago. This kit does not work. there are supposedly a couple factory brackets to attach this roller to. they don't exist, and even if the brackets were there, the bracket attaching the front of the deck to the frame would interfere with the roller.I'll be returning this item.

Perfect Fit
This nose roller fits perfectly on the Ariens 936060 42" 17.5 HP Lawn Tractor that I purchased new in August of 2013. The roller is approx 9.25 " long and with the brackets provided work with nose wheel to fill between the factory mounts perfectly. I put the the Poulan rear wheel kit and this nose roller and it makes my mower mow like a high priced model. The 1st shipment included the wrong bracket on on side "B" side. It had a post sticking out of area where acel should go through. Amazon was fantastic about getting me the correct part overnight and I did not even get to call them until 7pm the night before. I wish that all bills I got were handled as well as Amazon. I'm not kidding, overnight from Kentucky to PA by 12pm the next day. Less than 24 hrs and no charges. Thanks for being a company that I can depend on.
