Rotary Cheese Grater

Well made, easy to clean, involved & friendly customer support. I purchased one as a gift, and one fr myself, to replace a Zyliss rotary grater that I've had for about 25 or 30 years. The plastic cage inside the metal grater cylinder finally broke on the well used Zyliss that I was very happy with. The design of this grater appears to be much more durable. I'm not knocking the Zyiss, it lasted a long time considering that I primarily use it for hard cheeses, and straight out of the fridge on top of that... I guess I was just ready for a change at replacement time. The reviews are what helped me decide on this product, so far they were spot on. Thank you Orecchi, nice product:)))5.23.2019Still very pleased with the Cheese grater, I tend to use it when larger quantities are needed. I missed my smaller Zyliss grater, so I bought another for the smaller quantities I usually grate. Between the two, I have the right tool for what I’m doing at the time. This isn’t a negative comment, just my view and concern... being that the larger Orecchi has a longer handle, It flexes a bit when I squeeze it while grating. I worry that I’ll eventually break it over time, so if I’m grating a particularly hard cheese, I squeeze the handles right up against the grater head, or squeeze the push block/head itself. Only a minor adaptation on my part, I really like the Orecchi when I need a larger grater. The second Orecchi grater I got as a gift is in use and working out well.Bill

Complete Garbage, dont waste your time and money

Absolute Junk. The fine grating cylinder separated from the disc that connects it to the handle the second time I used it. The cylinder is simply pressed into the white disc that connects to the handle. No physical fastener to keep it in place. While grating relatively soft Asiago, the cylinder simply separated from the handle connector. The medium grating cylinder separated while grating Mozzarella. Yes, that is correct, it could not hold up to Mozzarella. Amazon would not let me use the language that I would like to, to describe this absolute piece of garbage. Save your money. Buy anything else other than this.

Good hand-cranked cheese grater

PROs:+ Easy to disassemble and clean+ Light, but solid plastic construction+ Works very well on medium-hard cheeses like cheddar and swiss. It also works, of course, on harder cheeses like parmesan and Romano pecorino, though it takes a little more elbow grease. (Haven't tried it on soft cheeses like Camembert, though I'm not sure why you would.)CONs:- The part of the handle that presses the cheese onto the grater is angled so that it pushes the cheese to the front instead of straight down. This sometimes causes issues with (1) jamming and (2) not being able to grate the last bit of cheese because it's being pushed forward instead of down.- Only one size of grater. It would be better if there were different sized grating drums that you could swap out.

Loving this rotary cheese grater!!!

Really great quality pasta cheese grater to get the right texture and consistency of our parmesan cheese when making asta dishes. I used to use one of those traditional graters but it doesn't give the parmesan the ideal thickness and texture and you also need to grate it on a plate prior to using. This one you can grate straight onto the dish. Its super easy to clean as you can remove the metal piece and it feel very durable and high quality. Goes as a nice housewarming present too as it comes in a really nice box with a little bag to store it in as well.

Disappointed

The first couple times this grater worked well and I was happy with how easy it was to clean. Then while using the larger grater, it broke off the housing that connected to the handle! I was only grating parmesan which is what I purchased this for and after only a few uses I feel back at square one. I can't find a way to contact the seller, and I'm outside the Amazon return window. So disappointing.

It grates cheese, but build quality is meh

The Orecchi Cheese Grater will grate cheese, but the build quality leaves much to be desired for the price point ($19-ish at the time of this review). In the box:My Orecchi came with a squeezable handle, a rotary crank, a metal (presumable aluminum) grater, and a storage bag. The parts are not assembled providing easy cleaning. Assembly is easy enough that my 8 year old was able to assemble and disassemble with minimal guidance. It should be noted that only one grater type is included in the box. There are other rotary graters that provide some variety in available graters, the Orecchi does not. The Orecchi website does not offer any accessories, either. A further disappointment given the product's price point. The Amazon product page claims it is dishwasher safe, no similar claim is found on the product's packaging. Never-the-less, I took some photos of the product and ran it through a dishwasher cycle to give it a go.Grating:One reason rotary graters offer different inserts is to accommodate different grating material. When grating cheese, for example, there are different varieties of cheese with different hardnesses. The Orecchi's single grater is ideal for hard cheeses, chocolate and nuts, but doesn't work so well for softer materials or cheeses. When grating softer cheeses, the Orecchi tends to grate as a long rope. Shorter grating cycles or grating with the open end down will help some, but may not provide the preferred result.Design:The Orecchi is modern looking and feels sturdy out of the box. Use was okay, but the Orecchi is designed for right-handed use only. Lefties can accommodate by holding with the head pointing left in the right hand and reaching under to crank with the left. An inconvenience - for sure - given there are other rotary graters that better accommodate either hand. The grater itself seems average. The loop for the grater is completed with a fold in the metal and - in mine's case - a single weld. The fold runs with the direction of grating so harder foods aren't likely to get stuck in the fold. Softer foods may, however. I am also concerned about the grater's ability to hold up against pressure. Too much pressure will likely bend the center of the grater (where most people will tend to grate). I'm unsure what the result from a bend in the grater might be. I bring this up more to urge caution about going into hulk-mode when grating...Cleaning:The Orecchi's product page claims it to be top-rack dishwasher safe. You will need to do this as there are many cracks where foods might get stuck. This isn't a problem with the Orecchi as much as it is with rotary graters. What is a problem for the Orecchi in the dishwasher is the...Construction:The Orecchi's construction is NOT up to par for the price. The plastic for the pressure arm is not a single piece of plastic. The head end of the arm is glued on and - in my unit's case - had gaps going into the head. At the end of the washing cycle, water was in the head, obviously not a sanitary situation. The fitting for the head to the arm was also poor with several points where glue was over applied. A file or something would have been nice to smooth the edge. I suspect this part will be failure prone depending on the glue used and the ability to withstand chemical and heat when washing in the dishwasher. The Orecchi has another failure prone part: the spindle attached to the crank. Looking over other reviews, I noted that many complained about the handle breaking. Looking over the spindle, it was noted there is a seam in the plastic that did not extend into the crank arm indicating to me that the spindle is likely a separately attached (glued) piece. Again, a likely failure point depending on how well the glue (if that's whats been done) can hold up to repeated dishwasher cycles with the heat and chemicals.Lastly, the plastic itself. I couldn't find what kind of plastic has been used with the Orecchi, but the high pitch when tapped indicates its something high density. That may be a good thing (for durability) depending on what was used...but it may be bad as the material won't respond well to heat (from a dishwasher). Time will tell on that one, but I'm betting the glued parts give out before the plastic fails.Verdict:I am hopeful for the Orecchi, but there are questions. I'm rating:Deisgn: **** Pros: Modern and sleekUse: *** Pros: Grated! Cons: Righties onlyConstruction: * Gaps, glue and seams leave me wondering how much of a service life this product has before failingResult: *** For now.I'll update the review how well the product lasts.
