The World Atlas of Wine, 7th Edition: New 7th Edition

They've Done it Again!
Congratulations to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson for the latest edition of the World Atlas of Wine. Beautifully produced, this volume has been substantially updated as you would expect, and the information is presented in a clear and attractive style. It will appeal to experts and beginners alike. The maps are clear and informative, and where there are many vineyards close together in areas such as Burgundy and Mendoza, a good combination of names and/or numbers and lists allows the reader to find the domaine in which they are interested. One could always want more information on each aspect covered, but that would result in a multi volume work instead of the single book as here. As it is it is a brilliant piece of work - well done, and thank you.

Bought as a birthday gift for my son who recently became interested in wines.
I cannot write a review except to say to you what my son said to me: (He has 2 graduate degrees): Mom, it is a beautiful informative book and I am reading it now instead of the last of Teddy Roosevelt series. As those 2 degrees would indicate that he has maintained his brain in working condition, I would assume that the book must be really OK in every aspect. I hope this counts as enthusaism for something I have not seen, but am delighted with the enthusiasm which bubbled up north. Also he told me it arrived in perfect shape and earlier than expected. HOpe this is useful. GK

Deserves its classic status but I sometimes struggle with the maps
There is no doubt that this is a classic wine reference book, and it is very helpful for my WSET Diploma. The info is thorough and the text is informative. (Also, delightfully, the text doesn't contradict the Oxford Companion, so the two are a pleasure to use at the same time. Yes I know HRH Jancis is involved in both, so perhaps I shouldn't be surprised, but it's still impressive given the scope of the undertaking. There's little worse when studying than having reference materials that contradict one another.)I've knocked off one star because of the maps. It might be churlish to complain about this in a reference work, but I find many of them too detailed and therefore difficult to use. All the information is there, don't get me wrong, but I can stare at the maps for a while and still struggle to get a real "feel" for the topography and its connection with the wine itself. I understand that space is a premium, and that this is probably the only way to include all the information the authors want to, but I can't help harking back wistfully to an old Oz Clarke Wine Atlas that I used to own, whose "3-D" maps were an absolute delight, and which gave me that link between topography and wine far better.

Recommended to me by an experienced wine taster
It's a really good book. I have been wine tasting for about a year and a half, however I have only started to take it seriously and really want to improve for about 6 months. I asked one of the guys at my wine tasting group who has been wine tasting for a little over 20 years, if he'd recommend any books, he recommended this. I later asked my wine merchant who agreed. I'm not a total novice, but neither am I an expert. I found the tone of the book, and the style of writing really helpful. The book is not so expert I find it hard to enjoy, and not too basic to make it boring. It's pitched very well for someone like me. The first 40 or so pages are general information on wine making, terroir, grapes etc. Then it moves on to the atlas section, with comments on the region, lot's of data and the like. It's a great book and I am enjoying it.

Informative & interesting wine book
Good coffee table bookA talking centre piece for party'sGenerally the type of book you will dip in and out of, but I find myself every time I dip into it, I stay reading for longer.Detailed, knowledgable information in relatively straight language although wine descriptions always do tend to be heavy on adjectives. The editions do evolve. If you are interested, I don;t think you need to get every edition but if you have say about the 4th or 5th edition and you've enjoyed it, might be worth considering an update.

Bottoms up for top tome
I can't add much to what has already been said here but you have to admire the scholarship, research, dedication, visual and verbal flair, and sheer enthusiasm that's gone into this marvellous book. Drinking wine is even better fun when you know about its origin and there isn't much worth knowing that you won't find here. This is by far the best and most bibulous atlas I've ever had the pleasure to own and you could share in the delightful experience if you just shuffle and click that mouse. Cheers!

Ditch the large price sticker on the back
Great guide to learn a little or a lot about wine. A little overwhelming when you notice its mass and number of pages but the wine world is a big place and requires a few pages to provide deep and meaningful coverage. But whoever (whomever?) the seller please ditch the oversize price sticker on the back of the cover or at least use a pressure sensitive material that can be peeled off. First time buying something through Amazon I felt like they were worried about me shoplifting or something.5 stars for the book, 0 stars for the seller and their price sticker

Davvero ben fatto e piuttosto completo
