Shimano R400 Down Tube Gear Levers with Cables

Works great with 80's era Peugeot with 14-28 Shimano 6-speed freewheel. I've used Simplex friction shifters on this bike forever, but it got to the point they were not functioning so well anymore. Using these Shimano shifters, the rear derailleur can be adjusted so that the 2 "extra" clicks on the low end become moot. You'll never know the extra positions are even there by the normal adjustment of the low limit so you don't shift into your spokes.Initially, I had an issue with the first click to shift from the smallest sprocket on the rear not doing anything but an "empty" click, but I found that the cable tensioner barrel on the derailleur can adjust that cable slack out by adding more tension. I'm really pleased with this purchase!I just have to get used to the very good positive indexing rather than feathering after every shift. (Won't take long!!!!)*As far as tightening goes, the first shifters I bought stripped out internally and no longer "clicked". (The right, indexed one) TOTALLY my fault - in hindsight! It worked as a friction shifter, but I had become so accustomed to indexing, I had to get replacement. After much research and disassembling to inspect, I realized my error. Even though the instructions list a torque value for the screw, it is so low, that many torque wrenches won't measure it. So... when tightening onto your frame boss, only tighten it enough that the shifter no longer "rocks" on the boss. Shouldering the screw is quite enough, and it isn't very tight.

I bought them to replace Sunrace r80 shifters. The rear derailleur is now easier to set and it is shifting smoothly like a full 105 system.

While they do work for 8 speeds, be aware there is no option for friction mode.

Would’ve fit perfectly but I received the box with only the shifters and none of the hardware. Will be returning, hopefully can get all the parts in the next order.

They feel great and are of course accurate and easy to tune. I was bummed out to find they don’t have a friction (non SIS) mode on the rear derailleur. That would make it way better. Regarding function/ finish, it is barely distinguishable from the 10 speed Dura-Ace ones.
