Q: How can I tell if it's magnesium or aluminum? It looks like aluminum.

Magnesium fizzes in vinegar; aluminum doesn’t.

I believe you are correct, I THINK the MAGNESIUM rod is the preferred anode for fresh water, zinc for salt water and aluminum for either. There are more knowledgeable persons than I on this matter. Best wishes.

Q: do you have to shut off water before installation?

Yes. Shut off the cold water supply to the water tank. Then open up the hot side of a faucet at a sink above the hot water tank. Then drain about a gallon or so of water from the drain spigot on the tank. That should lower the level of water in the tank and the lines to allow you to replace the anode rod. After that, turn the supply water back on, and turn off the faucet when all of the air has exited the system.
