2,4-D with extras
Most lawn weed killers have 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, which is a broadleaf herbicide, which has been around since the 1940s. I usually use Ortho Weed-B-Gone and spot-spray directly on weeds in the lawn. It contains 2,4-D, Mecoprop and Dicamba; all of which are "auxin" type herbicides that kill weeds by causing abnormal growth. Generally, the plant outgrows its nutrient supplies and dies. I will usually mix Weed B Gone with Ortho Weed B Gon Chickweed, Clover and Oxalis Killer , which is Triclopyr. This formula called WeedClear contains 2,4-D, Dicamba, and Quinclorac. Quinclorac is the addition to the standard formula that affects some grassy weeds like crabgrass. Target plants for Quinclorac are Crabgrass, Clover, Foxtail, Dandelion, Black Medic, English Daisy, Morningglory, Dollarweed, Speedwell, Torpedograss, Kikuyugrass, Barnyardgrass, Bindweed, Signalgrass, Violet. Do not use on Bahiagrass, Colonial Bentgrass, Seaside Bentgrass, Centipedegrass, Dichondra, St. Augustine.I have some areas of my lawn that I need to reseed this Spring, so I won't be able to apply a crabgrass preventer. So this formula will work well for me after the grass has established. I also like the battery-powered sprayer it comes with, which makes it easier to just grab the bottle and walk around the lawn to spot-treat without having to mix and pump a sprayer.

Update to previous review
A few weeks has passed since first review. Weeds have died. Guess I needed patience. It worked!

Lawn weed product that works
I used this product on my lawn after mowing it with a four or five day stretch of dry weather forecast in the mid-late spring. I am trying to reclaim my lawn after having gone organic the last few years and losing the lawn to weeds. As usual, there were tons of weeds, I don't know the names of them, especially where I had planted new grass seed last fall. I mixed with water as directed and sprayed my entire lawn making sure the leaves were covered. This is a contact killer, not something that works through the soil. It took several weeks but the clover was reduced by I'd say 75%, most other weeds died off and some other more sturdy broadleaf weeds weren't killed but were definitely supressed so I think one more application will get rid of them. None of my grass was killed even though it was covered in it. I kept my dog off the lawn until it was dry and didn't notice a second head growing out of her neck so I think it's fairly safe to use as directed. I get the feeling that there is no need to over concentrate this stuff in the mix. The directed amount worked great.

Does the job
Most weed eliminator products have one active ingredient 2-4D. This 'weed begone' has three active ingredients andattacks the weeds listed on the information brochure. CAREFUL...do not apply with temps above the recommended levels on the instructions...the mixture will obliterate your grass as well as the weeds. I learned the hard way.

Doesn’t work
Don’t waste your money. I’m so frustrated. It doesn’t work AT ALL. I still have weeds everywhere and I used it as directed. I’ll be spending money on a different brand that actually works now.

Visable results after one day...
I use Scotts 4 Step but the crab grass got out of control. I bought two of these with plan to use my pump sprayer (the nozzle gun on product is cute, but a pain if you have a lot to spray - also there was no hose - not sure why). I poured undiluted product with a surfactant solution (I bought on Amazon too-) it helps make weed killing liquids STICK to the weeds with only a teaspoon per gallon. I proceeded to pump sprayer and walk around lawn. I read be patient for results, but pics are sample of what I saw after one day. Crab grass does NOT look healthy throughout lawn. I think it works really well. Product has “ready to use” on sticker so I used it without any dilution other than the couple teaspoons of the surfactant, and I think that helped (big time) as I saw the application appear “painted on”each weed rather than running off. I can’t believe people pay lawn care industry hundreds ($$) for what you can easily spray (this product) with great results in Central Jersey. I will buy again. My grass is uneffected ... other than dying crabgrass all over.

DOES NOT WORK!!
Okay, This doesn't happen often but I have to be honest. This weedkiller was a total waste of money. I waited over 24 hours before writing this review to give it more of a chance to do something, anything! The only thing it even seemed to affect was the wild violets. The dandelion crabgrass etc look even healthier and standing taller. I am so disappointed, I almost feel like I sprayed Plant food on the weeds instead of weed killer. Never again Ortho.I'm going to mix up vinegar, epsom salt and dawn...something I know will work...such a shame
