This comes with a parabens warning- does that mean it is toxic? What is the point of filtering if it is toxic?

California Prop 65 requires any product which comes into contact with certain listed materials display the warning. It does not take into account how much contact the product has with that material or the amount of that material needed for the warning to be an issue. These warnings are on park benches and replacement house keys. This warning is on this product due to the packaging and not the cartridge itself.

Does this fit the white plastic ball housing I got from Gaiam?

No, it would be too large to fit. The unit this filter is used with is the Sprite Bath Ball.

how do i know when it nees replaced?

Every two months , you can start smelling the chlorine in the water.

Why does this filter cartridge cost more than an entire unit?

Because there are sellers that are not making anything on the bath filter and just trying to undercut other sellers
