Hi. First of all the child must identify emotions already. I would say you can use them with children between 7 and 12 years old. It can also be the perfect exercise to help them think about different posibilities and ways to cope with hard situations in an assertive way.

Do these cards tell you what to do in these situations or are parents supposed to wing it?

There is no information given telling you what to do. These cards are supposed to start a conversation between you and your child/children so that you can instruct them. The situations are not so uncommon that you - as the adult - will not know what to instruct the children to do. These are wonderful cards! I use them I'm my classes Pre-K through 2nd grade, and they are appropriate for these age groups with no problem. I'm glad I got them, even though I had to pay for them myself ...
