Yes, it can be used with water-based paint.

Why did my gun started leaking after I cleaned it?

Disassemble and clean it again to make sure if any trash stuck in threads. Make sure nothing got cross-threaded when you screwed it back together. Also, make sure the little accessories and spring are put over the needle in the correct order.

Gun doesn't spray at all, only dribbles even with thinner, why?

Make sure there is not anything blocking the air flow, and make sure the air valve has been opened; Or your compressor may be too small for the gun, not creating enough pressure.
