From memory, this particular model is not battery operated, and is purely 'push along'. Some of the more expensive train engines are indeed battery operated.

Could this function as a nice stand alone toy without the tracks?

Yes it could. But I think it's much easier to push around on the wooden track. Even if you purchased the basic circular track, which goes together like jigsaw pieces. My grandchildren love having the track pieces - it can be built with curves, straight, bridges etc (depending on the pieces you have). There are all sorts of possibilities, it's wherever their imagination takes them.

Does this fit none brio wooden tracks?

Yes, we have Ikea track and it's compatible with Big Jigs and Brio trains and accessories.

The picture on the box shows track but I can't see in product description that track is included. Is it?

No track, just the train. The photos show what is in the box.
