Extract old plugs from the holes in the porcelain. Clean out. Put a little grease or vaseline on the plug. Hold in place and knock in with soft headed hammer or mallet (rubber or wood). Then fit toilet seat. They work a bit like a rawlplug.

Q: What size diameter screws do you use with these (m6 or m5 or smaller)? my m6 screws hit the brass section at the bottom and do not go any further

Never got to use them as they didn’t fit the toilet pan we have. Had to have new hinges in the end - sorry we couldn’t help.
