WRONG! This is the 2G only unit! 3G is better as many companies will discontinue 2G service as ATT already has . Thebguy that says 3g and 4g is WRONG.

Do you need a cell phone or just be in an area where cell phones work?

You need a cell phone to use the app to locate its location. Keep in mind the unit does not include the extra power cord it shows in the picture you only get the one that charges the unit,

When 1st free year plan is activated? Once i purchased the item or once its activated somehow? I want to buy the kit but activate later once i needed.

You have to activate the device via the trackimo website. Once you complete registration, your plan is activated and the 1 year begins.

is that an external antenna in the kit? also, does it come with the hard wire kit?

The unit has its battery and it will work anywhere until the battery runs out..but if you want to install in a vehicle, you need the hardwire install kit which is available in the package price or you have to buy it separately....the wires that come with the standard device is not useful for installation in vehicle
