Special book
So glad I have finally added this book to my collection. It took a long time to ship to me because it was through Media Mail but this time it was worth the wait (I ordered from a different seller once before and got the wrong book after waiting for it for nearly a month). I also have the two Little Nemo books and a couple of others by this publisher. Beautifully produced books- I hope there are more in the pipeline!

What a stunning book. I am so please with this book. It is giant, and features some incredible early 20th century comic strips by some very recognizable illustrators including Johnny Gruelle (creator of Raggedy Ann) and John R. Neill (illustrator of nearly 40 Oz books). I cannot say enough about this format and this publisher. You literally see the pages full comic strip size.

Page after page of stunning revelations
Of the few hundred books on comics I own, this has to be one of the top five, if not the very best. I can't rave enough about this volume. Its presentation, selection, and sensibility are outstanding.First off, the presentation of the pages in their original size is a revelation. You can't even imagine the difference between reading a 10 inch high reprint and the vast size of the original. It makes a world of difference -- the art, designed for a large size, takes on new life, and you truly realize, for the first time, how the page was designed to work. The book preserves the original colors and printing qualities of the original pages -- and yet careful restoration work has also been done to make sure the pages are as pristine and readable as possible -- they sparkle!Secondly, the selection is terrific. Organized around the theme of fantasy -- a rich vein in the early days of comics -- this magnificent treasury offers some of the best American comics ever done. The centerpiece of the books is the complete Sunday comics of the great Lyonel Feininger. As the informative essay included on Feininger (with additional rare photos and art) explains, the Kin-der-Kids" and "Wee Willie Winkie's World" were part of a large, brilliant body of work by an important artist of the early 20th century. To see Feininger's pages in their full, resplendent glory is to become as immersed as possible in a dream on paper. As if this weren't enough, we also get a generous selection of Winsor McCay's rare color "Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend," another masterpiece of American comics. Publisher Peter Maresca has included dozens of other amazing selections -- most of which have never before been reprinted and are in themselves revelations. There's the complete "Explorigator," several examples of George MacManus' "Nibsy the Newsboy," and so much more. And then there's the sensibility - which to me is about as good as it gets. The comics are treated with the utmost respect without being marginalized into either the ivory towers of academia or the rarefied air of obsessive collectors. The essays are extremely well done and loaded with extra cool art. The book even includes a special Feininger insert. This is a book made for everybody -- adults and kids alike. Whether you know old comics or not, this book will be a joy to behold. It brings back lost magic -- and there few things in this world that accomplish that. The price tag may seem high, but it's actually an amazing deal. Even if you could possibly find these pages to purchase (which could take years of effort) you would easily pay 20 to 30 times more than the cost of this book. Sunday Press is a small publisher and deserves your support to keep on bringing out these revelatory, joyous collections. - Paul Tumey
