Take a Backyard Bird Walk (Take a Walk series) Paperback – June 1, 2005

I was a little disappointed when I received the books. I was expecting more of a bird identification guide. This book contains a few, very few, pictures and how to identify birds. It is more of a workbook with information on nests, beak types, habitat, feeding habits, etc. But I bought the books for my seven year old grandkids and they were delighted that they can write in the books. There are blank pages for them to fill in and questions for them to answer and space for them to draw birds that they find. Overall, it is a good book for kids, just not what I thought it would be.

Jane Kirkland makes discovering nature and all it has to offer a very enjoyable activity. Her questions and tips are geared toward helping a child develop an understanding and love of the natural world. I thoroughly recommend this for all children old enough to read, write and observe the world around them. Pages are colorful, filled with interesting tips and thought-provoking commentary.

Great nonfiction book; I used in my classroom as an anchor text to teach informative writing.

Jane Kirkland is a great author who helps kids raise their awareness of the natural world, right in their own back yards. Nice photos and user-friendly format.

What a fabulous book, we love it!!! The author of this book visited my sons school and gave a great presentation on this book to the students. I ordered a copy of the book because as both an educator and a mother it seemed like a great idea and fascinated me. I was not disappointed when the book came home, I looked through it and found it to be both detailed and easy to follow.The pictures are great and the author shows the children how to record their observations with organized charts in the book right there for them while they are out observing. There are many follow up activities with web pages to visit and ways to remain involved with birds in your own backyard so it does not have to end with the walk. This is something to get the kids outside enjoying nature once again in this largely technological world and it does not cost a lot of money, that in itself is hard to find now a-days. I think the book is great for kids of all ages as I have three kids who are 7, 8 anbd 11 and they all enjoyed it. The best part for me was that they were anxious to go talk a hike and look for all the birds we read about and see who could spot the most and be able to name them from what we had read. They did not complain about having to walk away from their Game Boys, Playstations,or T.v.'s. Anything that can do that, in my opinion, is a 5 star book.

My whole family has spent many afternoons enjoying this book. My eight year old daughter takes it with her on bike rides, trips to the park, and walks around the neighborhood. This book is very informative and easy to use. My kids love being able to write observations and draw pictures in the book. This book is great fun for kids and adults. It can be used in or out of a classroom, for birthday parties or a scouting activity. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys birds or being outside!!

As a 40 year old adult, I purchased this book because of my interest in birds and to review the content for my two nieces. This book turned out to be an exciting learning tool that completely held my interest. The reader is drawn into the content of the book as you go outside into the fresh air and interact with nature. What a wonderful job the author has done with the photos and the outlined activities. You can use this book over and over again, as each time you go outside, something is always different.I am looking forward to reading further works from this author. I am sure my nieces will find this book as enjoyable as I have.

This book is great! I saw the author at my school and thought she knew a lot, and I wanted to know more. I got the book and now I know more about birds and had fun. Then my dad got interested and I really like spending more time with him. Buy this book if you like to have a good reason to enjoy being outside. By Kevin
