Not the film I was expecting!
Waited a long time to see this and after all the hype wasn't sure it was my kind of film. Also never really liked a Ryan Reynolds film. Have to say this was action, emotion, good acting, funny, sad. A great film.

Hilarious Superhero Antics
Deadpool is the hilarious 2016 superhero film starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular anti-hero. It is clearly an adult film with several sex scenes and plenty of jokes that will go over the heads of the younger audience it isn't intended for. The plot is somewhat secondary to the excellent characterisation and the unusually realistic romance. The DVD version has no real extras to speak of, just a gag reel which includes some Ryan Reynolds riffing on set and some awesome ad libs by TJ Miller. The other extra is basically a set of trailers which aren't as funny as the film itself. The film takes a while to get going and in truth it does not start out particularly funny. The jokes warm up through the film as many of them are referential or in-jokes which play on the expectations of a Marvel film. The film starts almost literally with a bang and there are a few action sequences to follow. These are generally among the least interesting parts of Deadpool. He's an intriguing combatant but it is not particularly tight choreography. What works best during the action sequences is Deadpool mouthing off to his opponents.Deadpool casually insults those around him and mocks people amusingly. He is not correct in any way and that makes it a not-too-guilty pleasure. Somehow Reynolds imbues Deadpool with such charm that he's never really offensive, just funny. The scenes with barman friend Weasel played by TJ Miller are among the best. The two banter like real people. Weasel even bets his good friend will get killed. The banter feels realistic and is sharp-witted. Weasel's reaction to Deadpool's physical transformation is the kind of honesty only a good friend would offer but it is still hilarious.Perhaps the best of Deadpool's relationships though is with his love interest Vanessa. Played by the beautiful Morena Baccarin she has a proper adult relationship with the hero. Unlike too many Hollywood romances there is a vibrancy to the relationship and it is fairly explicitly adult. The pair share a number of sex scenes in different locations. A montage sequence featuring the pair really speaks to a physicality in their relationship that Hollywood usually glosses over. The realism of the pairing comes from Vanessa's introduction "your crazy matches my crazy". It makes sense that the two are together. Of course it helps that both Baccarin and Reynolds are attractive people but there's a realism beyond the good looking superficial appearance. As this is the Deadpool show, the main villain does not have so much to work with. Ed Skrein plays the role of Ajax pretty much straight. There isn't any of the cheeky charm Skrein is capable of, presumably because the humour is designed to be through Deadpool's wit rather than his viillain. A bit of a missed opportunity really as it could have been fun to see Reynolds and Skrein trading barbs. Skrein's accent of course makes him a natural bad guy but he does seem to be having a bit of fun with the malice of his character's torment as Deadpool becomes his super self.A couple of minor Marvel characters make an appearance but they basically seem to exist for Deadpool to make jokes. The line about turning up at the Professor X's school and only ever seeing the two of them is a funny way of pointing out the difference in concept between Deadpool and other X-Men productions. The visualisation of Colossus is much more akin to the original comic concept and the voice is reminiscent of appearances in the animated series. The disapproval Colossus has for Deadpool's lifestyle is an easy target for banter. The appearance of the ridiculously-named Negasonic Teenage Warhead is probably just there for the name but the sullen teenager routine opens itself up to excellent lines from Deadpool. The costume design and colouring is good enough for this kind of film but clearly not the same as a bigger budget adventure. Reynolds looks a bit silly in the Deadpool suit but that's part of the charm. The others are not particularly interesting to look at except Vanessa who is beautifully attired. The film's music is a bit of an odd choice. The DVD theme song is X Gon' Give It to Ya which is neither new enough to be cool nor old enough to be retro. A perfectly fine song but it doesn't seem to suit Deadpool at all. Musically this is not a particularly memorable film.Visually Deadpool is fine, making use of frequent freeze-frame techniques during action to showcase Deadpool's abilities while bullets are flying around. It slows the action down quite often which means it loses some intensity but it is fun to see Deadpool's antics and that's what the film is ultimately about.Deadpool at its heart is a funny and light-hearted take on a classic comic book character. It breaks the fourth wall knowingly, it uses in-jokes and banter between its characters to fire off barbs and make each scene worth smiling at or laughing with. There are not too many films like this one.

The secret origin of the merc with the mouth
A movie adaptation of a comic from Marvel. Had a few of those in the past few years. But this is a rather different movie to all the others. It comes from Fox studios, rather than Marvel studios. The former do the X Men films. The latter do almost all the others. So this does mention and tie in with the former. But none of Captain Americas and Avengers and the like.Ryan Reynolds plays Wade Wilson. AKA Deadpool. Who he also played in X Men Origins Wolverine. Let's just say this is a fresh take on things. So disregard that one.Wade is a motormouth. Has a very strong sense of humour. And runs around in a red suit with swords gutting and shooting bad guys. How did all this come to be?This is structured totally differently to the usual superhero films in that it's not entirely linear. It starts with an action sequence, and jumps back and forth between that and what happens after it. The flashbacks filling in how we got to this point. There's a heck of a lot of violence along the way. But it's knowingly over the top, in the style that encourages you not take it seriously. And the whole film doesn't so much break the fourth wall as damage it with a sledgehammer beyond repair. So this is very black comedy. But it's very funny comedy if you're in the right mood, and Ryan Reynolds get the character and the humour absolutely spot on.Added to which, it gives one of the X men more to do than they've ever managed before on screen. And it's a nice love story as well. Just not necessarily solely a chick flick. And definitely not a date movie.Ultimately the story and plot are pretty simple, but there's so much to laugh at in here that it will stand up to many repeated viewings, simply because you're bound to find funny moments that have slipped your mind.A perfect adaptation of a fun character. And a hugely entertaining film with it.Do keep watching to the very end if you hope to see a preview of Deadpool Two.Although the dvd box just says that the subtitles and Language options are English only, if you check the disc you will find they are: Although the box just says english for both, on the disc it's:Languages: English Russian LithuanianSubtitles: English Danish Finnish Norwegian Russian Swedish Estonian Lavian LithuanianThe disc goes straight to the main menu when loaded.DVD extras are:Sneak peek. A trailer for the film X-Men Apocalypse.Gag reel: five minutes worth of outtakes. Gag reels are usually people forgetting dialogue and being deliberately silly, but these are genuine and very funny outtakes.Deadpool's fun sack. Two sections to this. Videos and stills. The latter contains some posters for the film. The former has nineteen different trailers and other bits of promo material for the film. None are longer than a couple of minutes. They can be watched individually or in a row. There is some repetition as some are versions of the same trailer but with naughty words included second time around. But they are all great fun and well worth a watch.

Dirty, funny, sexy, violent and unabashedly romantic: Deadpool has arrived!
I really, really liked Deadpool. And you know what? I didn't expect to. Seriously, I was never a fan of the character (in the sense that I hardly knew anything about him) and the humor as well as the violence seemed forced and overdone in the trailers.Still, I remained interested in the film, I just never expected it to actually be good - until the reviews arrived. After most critics unexpectedly showered this newest superhero movie with praise, I went in cautiously optimistic (but still fully prepared to hate the film). The first thing I noticed was how inventive the storytelling is. The film throws you into the action from the first moment (literally: the very first moment) and then it goes back and forth in brilliant and unexpected ways to slowly unspool the story of this insane - but oddly charming - antihero. Flashbacks and fast-forwards can be annoying as hell, but when done right, they can help render even a somewhat simple story fresh and exciting. And that's exactly how Deadpool felt to me right from the start: like a fresh (if somewhat dirty) jolt of energy. The action itself is beautifully designed, employing playful visuals and using pretty much every camera technique available; it never feels repetitive and the pacing is close to perfection. But, and that was probably the key to me liking the film so much, there's a beating heart underneath all the action and carnage, and that has a lot to do with how brilliantly Ryan Reynolds portrays the character and the great chemistry he has with co-star Morena Baccarin. What came as a complete surprise to me was how unabashedly romantic Deadpool is. The love story in this film is probably the most sincere I've ever seen in a superhero movie and it gives the film the strong emotional core which so many of these movies lack. The humor, which I initially feared would just be non-stop juvenile wisecracks and soon become distracting, also works surprisingly well. Not every line or every joke lands - but that's the beauty of this character: they don't really need to. Deadpool can't help himself; as long as he's able to breathe he'll crack wise and make fun of himself and those around him. It's a clinical condition; he's not a stand-up comedian whose jokes need to land: he's a madman (albeit a very entertaining one) and the comedy in his case is born out of tragedy.Despite all my praise, it's not a perfect film. The villain in this revenge tale could be more memorable and the story itself is a bit too derivative to really do its highly unconventional protagonist (he insists he's not a hero) justice: but it's a damn good first entry in a franchise that will hopefully explore the character and his world to a much larger extent in the sequel(s). And it's actually a very important film for another reason. If Deadpool is a financial success - which at this point is already clear it will be - this could play a vital role in how studios henceforth view the financial prospects of R-rated superhero films, and we'll hopefully see more of them in the future. Many people might feel different - and I respect their opinion - but I've grown tired of the entirely bloodless CGI overkill in all those 200 million productions where even the most terrible villains talk like Mormon schoolgirls. I mean: there's a gigantic audience out there that is over the age of 18, loves to read comic books and can absolutely handle real-world language, real-world sex and real-world violence in superhero movies. This genre is so diverse; it's ridiculous to believe just because comic books have pictures in them all film adaptations - regardless of the material - must automatically be made for kids in order to be successful. As it is, I think Deadpool - a dirty, funny, sexy and violent film which is decidedly NOT for kids - just proved my point perfectly. 8 stars out of 10.P.S.
