No these are not smelly like tennis balls.

What are they made of?

They are made of a thick plastic...much like what a dog chew toy might be made out of. However, they do not melt in the dryer. Mine have worked wonderfully! I just wouldn't recommend doing more than two full cycles in the dryer consecutively.

Has anyone noticed these damaging your dryer? I don't know if it was just coincidence but soon after I started using these, our dryer drum was damaged

I haven't looked but I let everyone know that mine broke after maybe 6 uses... The other one is hard as a Rock, They do not take heat well obviously and harden when heated and break. THANKS for your review I will stop using the Rock Hard one and check my drum .

Dryer balls are used in a clothes dryer in place of fabric softener use. Place the dryer balls in with your clothes. The dryer balls do make thumping noise, and doesn't work well with bulky item such as bathrobes or bed sheets, you will have some static. But! If you are are very sensitive to artificial scents the dryer balls are worth it.
