Not sure what is meant by the wording but there is no non-return valve in this device.

Yes, 40mm is the threaded part.

Is there a shut off bit on the part where the pipe would connect on

It is open at the end where the pipe pushes on. It does not come with a push-on cap to blank it off when not connected to an appliance waste pipe.

What size barb does this have will my 29mm hose fit

Sorry, don't know the word 'barb' in this context but the tapered push-on fixing goes to max 25 mm and the larger screwed end matches standard 40 mm pipes
