It measures 59 3/4" high and is 35" wide. Depth is 9 3/8" empty, but will depend upon length of shoes.

Does the rack hold high heels on each level?

Each level is the same. The top shelf, however, can hold taller items, like boots and hightops. All can hold high heels. Love my rack!

how sturdy is the unit?

I think it's very sturdy, you have to screw the rods in and they stay put. I didn't add the wheels (I don't really need to wheel it around) and have it flush to the wall, it doesn't wobble, lean or tilt. I really like it, the only problem is if you have tall shoes (ankle boots or high top gym shoes) they probably won't fit well between the rows and, I wear size 11 shoes and can only fit 4 pair across which makes it a 40 pair rack, however it's so well made I can live with it. Hope this helps...I have had other shoe racks and this is the best by far. Thanks
