Q: How do you know when the valve needs servicing?

My cover was leaking. Was crack.

Q: Is this the economy model? the image shows white which is 0801-20 not 0801-20h2. the 0801-20h2 is black.

no both valves are the same but one is white the other is black. the vale is used usually in conjunction with a automatic chlorine feeder on a pool line to keep chlorine from flowing backward in a pool heater and ruining the copper in the pool heater.

Q: Would this prevent sewer gases from rising through a drain?

It might, but regular/gravitational water flow would not be enough to drain through the spring loaded flap. The flap will only open with high pressure water flow from a pool pump
