Sir Cumference and the First Round Table Paperback – Picture Book, July 1, 1997

My 4 year olds love this book! It's a fun story and has a nice recap at the end that makes it easy for kids to remember diameter, circumference and radius. But, I was happily surprised to discover that the book covers much more than circles. In the early attempts at making a table all can fit around, they cover some pretty cool things:-- cutting a rectangle in 1/2 to make it a square-- cutting a square on the diagonal to make a parallelogram-- octagons-- ovalsIt was a great book, made better by the addition of these other cool shape concepts. The plot moves fast enough that it's not boring at all, and teaches math in a fun and memorable way.

I bought the whole set to read with our grandchildren, ages 4 and 7. Now the 7--year-old is reading it on his own as well and seems to get these intriguing ideas behind numbers, shapes, dimensions, angles, and degrees. The series is written by an ingenious math teacher with a talent for weaving basic concepts into clever stories about "Sir Cumference," "Lady Di (of) Ameter," their son "Radius" and a host of similar Camelot characters. The illustrations are rich and fun.At first our 4-year-old was afraid to overhear about dangerous castles, scrappy knights, and dragons (which is strange, since she's willing to follow her older brother into the world of "How to Train Your Dragon"), but by flipping through the pictures beforehand and sometimes previewing the happy ending, I'm able to get her to cuddle up and absorb.I'm sure much older kids would enjoy Sir Cumference, too, and learn a good deal from them.I can't imagine why any children's or K-5 school library would not have these wonderful books on its shelves.

I used this book as a teaching tool to end-of-year 4th-Grade students as an introduction to Circumference, Diameter, and Radius, something they will study more in depth in 5th Grade. I put the book on a document camera so students could see the larger-than-life illustrations while I read aloud the story. They loved it. I think any age students like to be read to and they are never too old for a picture book. More important: Anything that can help students remember concepts earns accolades from me! The book got its best review the next day as we were continuing our Math lessons. As students were recounting terminology, I found they were using elements of the book to do so. I heard: "The measurement across a circle is ... Lady Di of Ameter, Diameter." And, What is radius? "Oh yeah, their son, Radius, was about half as tall as his mom Di of Ameter, so the radius goes from one point on the circle to the center point." The only reason I don't give it a full 5 stars is that I thought it was a little lengthy to use as an aide to a lesson. It took more time than I wanted, but it probably was well worth the time.

I bought this book to use in my practicum teaching. I was in a fifth grade classroom and they had just started their unit on 'Parts of a Circle'. My lesson was on a Monday following their introduction to the Unit on the previous Friday, so I wanted something easy and fun for them to follow along to.I scanned the pages and compiled them into a slideshow that I projected on the screen while I read aloud so the students could follow along.My Cooperating Teacher loved this book and the students loved the characters and story!I will carry this book on with me into my future classroom and will remember the lesson I taught to the students forever.❤️

I got this book for my 6yr old granddaughter who loves to read and reads way beyond her grade level. She was excited to get this book and she read it to me cover to cover. I got her 2 more books from the series, and she absolutely loves them! I think this series of books is a creative way to introduce mathematical concepts to young children.

This is a great book. It has lots of mathematical elements while also being fun for middle school students. I, as a math teacher, enjoyed reading this book to my students. The math terms that tie the book together are very creative in the way they are presented. If you are reading this book to a class of middle school students, it will take from ten to fifteen minutes to read completely if the class is attentive. The math described in the book can help students to remember those terms later.
