are they light enough for rv

They're not exactly light, almost as heavy as ceramic. They're heavy duty melamine ware. The 12 piece set weighs about 9 lbs.

Can you use a knife in these without scratching the plates?

yes - we do but don't cut too deeply. I haven't seen any deep scratches yet. love these - great weight - but wish they were less expensive. my 2nd set will have to wait
