It seems there is lots of space between the wall and the bag (like 2 to 3 inch). Is there a way to adjust the distance between the wal and the bag?

Unfortunately not, the only part that adjust is the front for the size/thickness of the gold bag. Sorry.

Is this strong enough to hold the bag off the ground, or is it just to keep the bag from falling over?

Ours holds the bag off the ground but the bag rest on a ledge in the garage
