The california lead and cadmium warning is a bit concerning - the most common alternative, kikkoman's miso doesnt have it. Any idea on the actual LD%?

The warning is because seaweed harvested in Japan has higher levels of lead and cadmium than seaweed from other areas of the world so they are required to include that information on the label according to California's prop 65. It's not enough of a percentage to be concerning and it's not even mentioned on most Japanese food not intended to be sold in the U.S.

Are these vegetarian?

They list bonito (dry fish flakes) as an ingredient, so I'd say no, not vegetarian. Most miso soups use bonito.

Made in Japan. The box had been made in China. Some Chinese made products have been critiscized, but the majority of what they produce is acceptable.

Why is there a strange bitter taste to these?

Some miso soups can taste funny. These didn't taste to bitter to me but I do feel like I have has better quality brands and miso soups before.
