Can this be used in a kitchen

Bull on some of the answers to this question. It can definitely be used in a kitchen! You should not mount it directly over a stove though! But using it to exhaust the room of smoke as an example is fine. You would have to be cooking with grease all of the time like a restaurant for any build up that would cause a problem. I have used fans like this in kitchens for many years without any problems. Panasonic is going to say it is not a kitchen fan for one because they do not want to get in trouble when you mount it right above your cook top. OK to mount in a kitchen to clear the smoke from the occasion burnt toast or popcorn or bad smell of some cooked foods. NOT OK to mount directly above a stove.

Yes, this would be an effective way to do that. 290 CFM is much, much higher than your standard bathroom fan so you can move a lot of air. I have one of these, although for a different purpose, and it's very quiet for the air volume it moves. Just be sure to have some way of getting air into that room while you use it, through an open window or under a door. It has to pull the new air in from somewhere as it pulls the smokey air out.

is this fan meant to be installed on single floor bathrooms? i'd like to install one on the bottom floor of a two story house.

It would depend on the clearance in your ceiling. I would think, no. It is very large.

Finally which exhaust fan did you install in the enclosed shower which is also a steam room. I have the same issue now and having a hard time to figure out.
