You need this if you are doing a schluter shower pan.

If you're doing a schluter pan, you can't really use a linear drain designed for a vinyl pan... it won't work. The nice thing about these is that they have a thin profile so there's probably no need to cut into the floor to make clearance for the linear drain, unlike linear drains designed for vinyl pans. The schluter system has really revolutionized the way showers are put together for the better. Makes for a much nicer, straighter, neater installation. Vinyl pans are ancient technology.
