Ralston Hot Cereal - 20 Oz (Pack of 3)

Yep .... finally, after looking since about 1970 or so, I found it. My mother served this to me many days in the 40's and I have never forgotten that taste .... with bacon and a nice piece of well-done toast. Like many other reviewers, I had given up on finding it again. It literally just disappeared. The story was a confused one, apparently about some kind of family issue with the people who owned the orignal rights to the product. Never was clear. Anyway, it's now back on the market, and near as I can tell, is very much like the original Ralston-Purina product of so many years ago. Not quite the exact taste I remembered (I think it's slightly less of a 'nutty' flavor than I recall!), but my eighty-plus-years-old taste buds ain't the same either. In any case, this is close enough to be very enjoyable. Is a welcomed substitute to vary breakfast diet from grits every day. Personally, don't care for the salt ingredient suggested .... just a spoon of sugar, well-mixed, does the trick. My order does not contain any foreign material mentioned in other reviews, as small, gritty white 'pellets'. Last comment .... the three 20 oz. packages, by the way ... is a LOT of cereal!! Just guessing, but suspect for a single person, at a third of a cup per serving, there's likely enough to last for a number of months!! YMMV!

Excellent breakfast cereal, both tasty and healthy. Unfortunately Amazon no longer carries it.

This is a hot wheat cereal. When cooked by directions, the texture is a little gritty but if you like grits, it has that kind of texture. I add a little butter and brown sugar to it. It is great to have on a chilly morning. It is good for your fiber intake.

The old Hot Ralston was a variety of cracked wheat cereal. This newer version is more like instant rolled wheat.Typically, cracked wheat must be boiled for 15-20 minutes. When I saw the directions on this new cereal, calling for boiling the product and letting it set for two minutes, I was skeptical. But we gave it a try.The taste and texture of the new Hot Ralston is more like raw wheat. There was no robustness to the product.So, I tried cooking it longer to see if the experience improved. It was much better the second time. Here are the revised instructions for cooking a serving of better Hot Ralston.For a large serving, put a cup and a half of water in a cooking pan and bring it to a boil. Have a half cup of cereal (I run it through a sieve to get rid of the powdery stuff), with a quarter teaspoon of salt, and a whisk ready to use when the water comes to a boil. (For a smaller serving, use a cup of water and a 1/3rd cup of cereal.)Slowly add the cereal and salt to the boiling water, stirring continuously with the whisk to prevent the cereal from clumping. Turn the heat down to simmer. Continue stirring with the whisk for five to 10 minutes. If the cereal becomes too thick, add a bit of water to maintain an acceptable consistency.Remove the pan from the heat and cover it. Let it set for one or two minutes to improve its consistency.I like the cereal served on a plate with butter, salt and pepper. It can also be served in a cereal bowl with sugar and milk.

Of all the cooked wheat cereals (Cream of Wheat, Malt-0-Meal, Instant Ralston) Instant Ralston is the least refined. It is rough but yummy when cooked slowly in milk. I like to add a BIG spoon of honey to my bowl.

After finally finding the hot cereal of my youth, why is it now "no longer available? I have been put on the list to be notified when next available, and waiting for just about 4 months. There are many folks across the USA who have fond memories of this tasty breakfast cereal. There is no other like it. It is so tasty. The mistake I made was making bowls of cereal for lunch and dinner. Now I'm without the best hot breakfast cereal ever made.

I grew up on this hot cereal. You can't find it in the stores anymore, so I have to special order it. Which definitely cost more-- But worth it!!!!This is a whole wheat cereal and there is nothing finer with a little honey and cream on it for breakfast.If you enjoy mushy slimy soggy taste and texture then eat your oatmeal and all the others and forget Ralston!!!
